Foot And Mouth Artists

cards, labels and a calender, all bearing pictures--all quite nice, but
unasked for--from an organisation of Foot and Mouth Artists. I am assured
that all the pictures are painted by people who are disabled in their hands
and consequently paint holding brushes in their hands or mouths. I am
invited to purchase these items (at rather steep prices) to afford these
people, who are pictured in the literature, a living. It is not a charity;
at least it does not claim to be or quote a Charity Commission registation
number.
I do give to a few deserving charities at the Christmas season, but I
have not given to this one. I have previously asked them not to send any but
they still do so. I just wonder whether some unfortunates are being
exploited by some hoping to be rather more fortunate.
Am I being harsh, cynical, mean, reasonable ,wise,etc, etc.?
Lend me some of that rough wisdom which flows occasinally through this
site.

artistic talent.
That seems strange to me because there is no reason that a disabled person
couldn't be a brilliantly talented artist, and although obviously
disabilities of this sort may present difficulties with certain styles of
painting and will cause other practical problems, there is absolutely no
reason that a person with no arms couldn't create truly excellent art.
Because creating great art is not entirely reliant on being able to use your
arms in any case. Artistic talent is so much more than that.
So to be honest I think those things are offensive and an insult to disabled
people who are genuinely talented artists. But to be honest at best it seems
somewhat disingenuous and at worse one wonders if it is just a scam.
But whatever it is I don't think it does disabled people any favours. In
fact years ago I was offered a job of teaching art and painting to a lady
with no arms. I turned the job down at the time (as did a few other people)
because I was probably a bit immature and a bit freaked by the idea. But it
was also because my perception of disabled people had been tainted by the
whole foot and mouth artist thing.
Yet I realise now through greater experience of life that preconceived ideas
are nonsense and there is no reason whatsoever that a disabled person
couldn't be an excellent artist. So I think these sort of things, which
present and label disabled people as totally incapable victims do more harm
than good, which is sad because that simply creates discrimination and
deprives disabled people which is tragedy.
