I apologise if this is too close to "spam" and offends anybody.

My wife is a fairly good artist and regularly sells pastel landscape
paintings of Wester Ross through galleries. She can't make a full time
living at it though. She has been trying to learn more about computer
graphics, especially Photoshop, in the hope of increasing her
"marketability" and perhaps teleworking from home as an artist.

Although she has been playing around with Photoshop for some months now
and has been given a couple of lessons on it by much more experienced
computer artists she is not really making much progress.

The problem is that she has nothing to really "do" with it. She draws a
few doodles for herself but has no real reason to get into the heart of
the programme and find out what it can do.

I would like to ask if anyone has any small Photoshop (or
Coreldraw/Painter) projects that she could do which would give her a
reason to really get started and learn these programmes. She has the £40
books, tuition CD's and access to help via contacts on the various
graphics newsgroups. All she needs now is a project to get her started.

Any offers anywhere considered. (We are near Stirling)

Thanks

Alistair

She needs to establish a good portfolio and display her work.

Free WWW websites are available and may be used for this purpose, as
long as no mention of commercial purpose is made. None is needed,
because anyone that visits and needs the service will nearly always
contact the artist by email, if they like the work.

Also, ask yourself a question. If I were searching for an artist to
do a job, where would I look, to find one? The answer can help you to
formulate a plan for promotion and advertising, which is important.

Good luck!

Additional: If you use UseNet/InterNet for promotion, be certain to do
so in the appropriate advert forums, or you will make enemies!

Thanks for the reply. I accept all that you say but we are not really at
that stage yet.

She has her work displayed and has her own domain name for the fine art
side but she has so little experience of Photoshop that she is not
really ready for commissions yet.

I was hoping that there was some way I could get her some "homework"
from people with minor Photoshop tasks that she could undertake and
learn about the programme as she did so. I hope she will find some work
eventually but we are not looking for that yet.

However what you say makes sense and is good advice for anyone trying to
break into the graphics field - overcrowded and underpaid as it is :-(.

Thanks again.

Alistair.

How about some of the charities in your area - what ever field you are
interested in - or posting slightly more detailed info on groups that might
have such people? Charities are always looking for new ideas, without any
money, but you need to make sure they understand you are looking for unpaid
work at this stage - as spamming under many guises is rife. You never know
it may turn into proper work - the best marketing is a satisfied customer
charged or free
Jill

p.s - feel free to rumble around my site and play with ideas if it helps or
inspires ( links would be really appreciated if anything comes) - I have
zero artistic ability ( my brother got all those genes) and zero money (so I
can't go and buy interesting things)

Hello Jill,

Thank you for the reply. I did think of going down that road. You seem
to understand what I was after - not paid commissions yet but rather
opportunities to make use of the programme so that we are more motivated
to get on and learn it.

I will indeed talk to some of the voluntary bodies, charities, etc. They
have a central clearing office in Stirling for volunteers, etc so that
would be a good place to start.

Thanks for the tip. I recall visiting your site already. Its good.

Regards Alistair
