In case you have not heard, Tower Hamlets council have given
permission to turn Spitalfields market into a Trading floor. This
will see the destruction of most (but probably all!) of the market.

If you have never been to spitalfields on a Sunday - GO while you
still have the chance. The market has a wide diverse range of
activities. On the one hand it is a organic food market - if you want
fruit, veg, dairy products, bread and meat free from pesticides and
other nasties which tastes so much better and is medically better for
you and your kids then look no futher. There is also a wide, diverse
range of food stalls from the Deli which serves wonderful Bagels to
Bubbas barbeque severing beefbergers made from organic Highgrove beef,
there's mexican, japanese and much more! As a fly in the ointment to
the powers that be - these food stalls do a roaring trade during the
week from city workers.

There are craft stalls, clothes shops, an organic paint shop and a
sports facility which regularly hosts kids football tornaments during
the week as well being used by adults at weekend.

Personally I believe that spitalfields market provides a valualble
asset to people who live and work in the area. We do not need a new
trading floor and even if we do why does it need to be in the city and
why take away the ONE part of the city which is given over to the
general public, bringing life to a part of London which before was
virtually dorment at weekends. Another important factor that no one
has considered is what is the life expectancy of this trading floor
going to be? We have just seen the change over at the stock exchange
to electronic trading, negating the need for vast trading floors. How
long before the new futures market goes the same way and the space
ripped away from us is left dormant and all that once was is lost.

OK, cards on the table. I live in Hackney, I have spent many an hour
there eating and shopping there with my family. There are attractions
there which my two young nephews have gained great pleasure from. I
will greatly miss my Sunday mornings there. I am greatly saddened,
the loss will mean a lot to me personally but believe its impact will
be felt throughout the area.

In conjuction with the flower market in Columbia road we are seeing a
renaissance and transformation of an area of London which has for
years been rundown and left for dead - only now when the city happens
to need a little bit of space do they trample on the little people and take
away someting from them. And it isn't as if there is not pleanty of
space available - it just so happens that to convert this building
will be a hell of a lot cheaper than converting an exsiting office
block!

But don't take my word for it. Go why you still can, go for a bit of
shopping, have lunch or breakfast there. If you like it: tell others
and sign the petition's. but if nothing else go there and enjoy
yourself. The more people that go the more ammunition we will have to
stop these kiljoys!

Dear Ma(r)tin

Sounds like you found the maguee(? sic) and didn't write this message till
you left it many hours later. The point is, would you rather have a
successful and popular market there or even more offices?
