Whilst I agree with your sentiment RH, I hate any type of violence, and in
an ideal world I would say get rid of all of our defences. But whilst there
are still nutters out there, especially in the Middle East with their
sun-baked brains, who have nuclear capabilities and hatred for Western
civilization, then I feel that we must keep up our defences.
Point taken. I agree absolutely with what you say, but where do we start so
as not to leave ourselves wide open?
I do my little bit wherever I can to try to make this world a better place
for our children to live in, and sometimes I despair at humanity. But I
believe that there are plenty of good people out there amongst the apathetic
majority, and slowly Governments are having to take notice of us. It is that
belief that keeps me going.
> Should it be brought back?
As an ex-serviceman of 12 years, I believe a 2 year national service
(18-20 year olds) should be brought back into effect.
It would reduce unemployment for starters. Good discipline, self
motivation and politness
is drilled into the individual. It would sort out a lot of wasters in
this country.
As usual the UK is behind with a lot of our laws, quite a few European
countries still have National
service. As well as becoming a confident adult, the forces is what this
country will always need,
especially with the current Terrorist threat. You become far more aware
of the golobal situation and can
feel confident as a British citizen after being in the Armed forces. I'm
not trying to sell the forces, but National
service would reduce crime, give confidence in women (Self Defence), and
improve your life style.
What job do you know that pays you 365 days of the year, feeds you,
gives you a roof over your head, paid holidays,
go to countries (While getting paid)that no-one else has been to. A 2
year National service for all males/females
from the age of 18 to 20 should be considered by the government. If you
enjoy it stay in,
if it's not for you thats fine. Either way its a great job, like all, it
has it's ups and downs, which is to
be expected in all occupations.
Don't believe all that you read in the papers about this squaddie did
this, that naval officer did that,
it's not all bad, if anything the forces don't promote themselves
enough. I served for my Queen and country
as a true british patriot, and I feel that most of our next generation
should do the same.
To protect our country (from whom you may ask), you never know whats
around the corner. Times are changing
at an incredible speed, and this country should continue to be the best
Armed Forces in the world.
I certainly want that to continue as I grow old, knowing there are
people out there to protect us
from whatever the world decides to throw at this nation!!

Well put The Donxstery my sentinments excatly. Also an ex-serviceman Royal
Engineers 1954/62.
The French President recently said that he would love France to have the
same level of armed forces as the UK and thought the best way of doing it
would be to get rid of conscription, forgetting the main reason perhaps why
the French army isn't that good is because it's full of the French!
Just hope we don't have a European army to replace our own!
Roger
As an ex National Serviceman, and as a representative of the hundreds
who have joined the Associations in my sig., I cannot add a word to the
statement by The Donxster other than, he has hit the nail fair and
square on the head.

National Service (RAF) Association.
National Service (Royal Navy) Association.
National Service (Army) Association.
Yes I believe that it should be brought back, but by using a morden approch.
The services is not just about digging trenches sitting in the mud and
shooting people, it is also a brilliant training camp for Mechanics, Heath
workers, IT professionals... the list is endless. The services want
professional solders, so let the professionals do that, but bring back
national service as a ground breaking skills provider for young people. At
the present moment there are far too many kids out there with simply nothing
better to do than slash your tyers or tell you to f-off (very steriotypical
I know). If they had the oppurtunity to atchally learn potential skills
while giving back to the system we are all better off.
The benifits would be:
A better skilled population
Lower unemployment
Reduction in crime
I know that a lot of young people are against the military so why not extend
the term 'National Service' to include the public sector? I am sure that
everyone could see the benifits in that?
However I am sure its against some Human Right or European law somewhere...
Unilateral disarmament doesn't work. The nutters see you've disarmed and
then destroy you utterly. It happens over a period of years as an
evolutionary thing - our armed forces have gone from aggressors to
defenders, next step is for them to evolve into a policing force and from
there the arms can be dropped as a global society dominated by no single
nation develops - at which point pigs start flying and warp drive gets
invented.....
Bring back National Service in the way I did it.
10 months intensive Radio and Radar Training. Theory and Practical. In
with the Regulars who had signed on for 9 Years and the Royal Navy was
giving them, and me, the best.
None of the bulls**t about cutting grass with a pair of scissors to
'keep you occupied', or painting coal white because there was an
inspection coming. (Or to see if anyone had pinched any overnight)
At sea in an 'active' fleet as an 'active' person, part of the ship's
company alongside the Regulars, doing the same duties and sharing the
same pleasures and problems. Learning to 'live together'. Learning to
'help' each other. Learning that you are not the only person in this
world.
And to show what the training was like and how it was respected, I
answered an advertisement in the local newspaper for people to 'install
telephone equipment in people's homes and factories'. I had completed a
5 Year Apprenticeship at J S Whites at Cowes as a Marine Electrical
Engineer, but on completion of National Service, had settled in
Leicester where they don't build too many ships :-((, so had to
diversify, hence answering the advert. I had an interview and was told
to bring 'any relevant documentation of electrical experience'. I took
my H.M.S.Collingwood Books.
"What have you got there?"
'My Radio and Radar training books from H.M.S.Collingwood'
"When can you start?"
National Service was a bloody nuisance at the time. ALL National
Servicemen will admit that, but, in retrospect, I am VERY glad I did it.
"A 2 year financial disaster and the food was bloody atrocious, but I
wouldn't have missed it for the world". Not my words, but the sentiments
of an ex RAF National Serviceman who has joined the RAF NS Association.
Bring it back.
Roger
I would be proud to serve with them. They were smart, efficient and on
the ball. And they spoke better English that I spoke Austrian :-((
>Roger
and long may it continue. That way we will avoid Nuclear War. We are a
'defensive' Nation, our Armed Forces are 'defensive'. Defensive against
the aggressive nations no matter who they may be.
I sleep easily at night because I know that we are well covered. I pity
any nation or mob who tries to take on the UK.
Mike
I was surprised at Ezwins earlier posting as to the French admiring the
professional British Army.
I've always considered that the British forces have always been trained
professionally be it in today's modern forces or during the National Service
era.
Dan
To the point Dan where the French are seriously considering abandoning
conscription altogether.
