Oil Drilling at Arreton
British Petroleum Co. commenced drilling for oil in the Lower Greensand
strata at Perreton Farm on the outskirts of Arreton in October 1952 and
continued until April 1953, reaching a total depth of 5161 feet. The
successions of formations penetrated with their respective thicknesses are
listed below. Slight traces of oil and bituminous lignite were found at
various points but apparently not enough in commercial quantity. British
Petroleum Co., prepared a graphical form of the Well-Log, giving exact and
complete details of the drilling thought the period and these were logged
with the Museum of Isle of Wight Geology. The drilling details and core
samples in feet are listed here:

What part of
" Islanders would have a bridge no more than they would have oil rigs
or wind farms" do you not understand?

There have been several exploratory drillings and other geological
tests around the island over recent decades, looking for traces of
oil.
You have found records of one unsuccessful test drilling.
Congratulations to Google.

Now will you ask Google how many "oil rigs" have received planning
permission by Islanders?

And what if they had found oil, either in the 50's or the 70's?

Do you think the oil companies would have said "You don't want the rigs? OK
we will go away"

For once I have to agree.............if there are profits to be made,
then its very very silly to think anything else is likely to be
considered!
