Too complex I feel. The problem is that when traffic lights were installed
on the pedestrian crossing, traffic coming from Newport seeing green hurtled
across the crossing AND the junction. That is why the lights were taken out.

Also, traffic from Ventnor and/or Winford don't always 'just cross', but go
either to Sandown or Newport, this I feel would be 'an accident waiting to
happen' if for example a car from Ventnor wanted Sandown and a car from
Winford wanted Newport. Who gives way?

So we make it Sandown - Newport on green everything else on red. Then
Ventnor green, all else red, then Winford green, all else red, .............
then all road traffic red whilst the pedestrian crossing is green!!!

How long will that cycle of lights take????????

The fault lies with the car park being on the opposite side of the road. No
I cannot see the answer, only the problems. I have been doing that crossing
since 1952 and it has NEVER been easy and with MUCH more traffic now
................... ;-(

It would be no different to any other crossroads controlled by lights.
Lights can be sequenced to allow longer times for the main road, and
timed for Shanklin > Neport longer in the morning, reverse at night.

Yes it would be a long sequence but no longer than anywhere else.
Yes it takes longer than a roundabout but there comes a point when the
level of traffic makes a roundabout unviable.

and the gap between the crossing and the mini roundabout? (Which I assume
would be removed, but the gap between the crossing and the junction?)

Those stupid b*****ds who press the Pedestrian Crossing button

Yes there would need to be a pedestrian sequence in the traffic
lights, just like any other crossroads.

Yes it would be misused, just like any other pedestrian crossing.

Yes you would get held up in your car, just like any other crossing.

You are used to being held up in Lake, why should you expect Apse
Heath to be any different?

Traffic is increasing on every road, and since Island roads can't be
widened or have flyovers, suitable controls have be introduced.

Before long you will be driving to Newport with a 50mph or less limit
all the way. Traffic lights at Apse Heath, Watery Lane etc and it will
seem quite natural.

and you can do 50 + NOW?

I find the average speed is 'about' 40 with the possibility of overtaking
nil

Where would you build it on the shop side? It would occupy at least

What about pushchairs and the disabled?

Would the 76 year old who died last year have been able to use it?
Was he even crossing that way? What about the other three roads?

Come off it. It's a regular thing to see people doing a damn sight
more than that past the Fighting Cocks. 60+ is not uncommon.

There really isn't an easy answer to this problem junction. As stated
elsewhere in this thread traffic lights were tried a few years ago with the
general opinion that it made crossing the road even more dangerous with
drivers thinking green light meant full steam ahead regardless of of anyone
being on the pedestrian crossing.
The problem is also one of distraction where many drivers are confused by
having too many hazards to cope with at once i.e. roundabout, traffic and
crossing all on top of one another.
I'm afraid, as with many other traffic problem spots on the island there
just isn't a fool proof answer.

There is a simple answer................re-adoption of the now shelved
IOW monorail project! This would bring enormous benefits to the
island, reducing traffic by maybe 50% and at the same time making it
far easier to get from a to b...............

That's because there was a separate pedestrian crossing.
If there was a pedestrian sequence on the crossroads lights,
pedestrians could cross in ALL directions in safety.

The problem at Apse is that being a roundabout everyone has an
expectation of getting across without delay, and there is a pedestrian
crossing too close to it.
Remove the pedestrian crossing, put in lights at the crossroads with a
pedestrian sequence (requested by buttons of course), and it will be
the same as every other crossroads with pedestrian traffic. Vehicles
will know there is a red/amber/green sequence, pedestrians know the
traffic will stop on the red.
