they're broadcasting over one golfer's remark to another, I really do
believe the world's gone mad.

Its offensive in the same way as if you invited an aboriginal barrister
round for dinner and served him witchetty grubs. The implication is you
can take the nigger out of the plantation but you can't take the
plantation out of the nigger. Making quips about fried chicken to black
people in America is a well recognised racial slur with overtones of
being an Uncle Tom i.e. a nigger who knows his place and can be pacified
with traditional comfort food and aspires to no better. So even if it
appears to be innocent to the uninitiated, for a black American the
implications are loud and clear.

This imbecility is part of a long term agenda to browbeat us into
fearful submission, to make us afraid to express our thoughts, to

All of which is true, but why should some ignorant Spanish bloke know
that? Spain is decades behind the US and UK in race relations.

Dunno if you remember but a few years ago Spanish fans turned up to a F1
test day *blacked up* to insult Lewis Hamilton. If they think that is
OK, then there is little chance they know about the chicken thing.

Personally, I really don't agree with countries who are advanced in some
way ripping on countries yet to catch up. Spain is miles behind, it will
take decades for them to get to where we are now. Instead of outrage,
they should just have it explained in a calm way like you just did. Let
them learn.

He clearly didn't expect or intend the comment to cause such offence,
he's been given credit for that already, had he called him a nigger an
apology would not have sufficed. He is an international sportsman whose
comments are likely to be widely reported, it was incumbent upon him to
work out the implications. He was familiar enough with the phrase to
realise it had weight, he should have chosen his words more carefully.

Because his lack of cultural awareness has some plausibility he will get
to apologise and move on. I don't have a problem with that. I do have a
problem with people claiming there was nothing wrong with the comment at
all and that Tiger Woods was making a mountain out of a molehill.

The fact is that golf has a long and inglorious history of overt racism
and requires its players to observe the most ridiculous of niceties when
it comes to trivia, and whilst I've no desire to see Garcia pilloried
beyond his apology, I don't see why he can't be expected not to make
racist comments any less than he can be expected not to play the front 9
in a bikini.

Actually the Moors invaded Ireland and Scotland. Hence in the USA

indeed it is considered a compliment in the USA. I almost married one

I still remember the last time I ate that greasy chicken gristle. I had
to take a distressed UK installation engineer out for some comfort food
in Japan after a moderate earthquake had shaken him up a bit. It was a

It was the worst meal I ever had in Japan. Even McDonalds was better!

The reaction of most Americans working in Japan was interesting. The
black guys thought it was great as they just got treated like *any*
other foreigner but the white guys were forever harping on about these
racist "Japs" (sic). Actually their wives were much much worse. They
even complained that the Shakey's potato skins were not done right.

In fact the level of racism apart from the few weirdos who drove around
in black ex-police vans waving the old Japanese flag was nothing more
sinister than the sort of thing you get from waiters in France or Italy.

They would for instance draw straws to decide who had to go and deal
with the table of gaijin - especially when you were out in the sticks.
Once they realised some of us spoke Japanese they were happy.
