I don't see how he possibly can.

No-one at the BBC claimed that he was the person they were referring to,

and it certainly wasn't common knowledge that it was he was the one.

Other people made that link, and if he wants to sue anyone it has to be
them,

But I don't hold out much hope of him identifying them

Why on earth would he lose?

He appears to have a cast iron case.

There is little chance it will go to court, but will instead be
settled by quite a large out of court payment (probably to a charity
of his choice).

Very easily.

>No-one at the BBC claimed that he was the person they were referring to,

There was sufficient information to make it clear.

No it doesn't.

They are the ones who show that there *was* sufficient information in
what Newsnight said.

>But I don't hold out much hope of him identifying them

He won't need to.

Really,

I had absolutely no idea from the information reported afterwards (I didn't
see the actual report so maybe there was some extra stuff)

And?

Whether any specific individual knew ort not is irrelevant.

If there was sufficient information to enable a number of people to
identify him, and at least some of those people would be likely to
think less of him as a result, that is enough for libel purposes.

This is the point I am disputing. All that seems to have been said is is
that it was someone from the Thatcher era.

How is that enough to identify any individual?

Just because someone might guess right doesn't make it enough.

That part is not in dispute

I haven't watched the programme (and wouldn't), so I don't know
exactly what was said, but it is clear it was somewhat more than that.

It wasn't guessed right.
