16-year old girl needs ADVICE urgently, please!
THE FACTS
1. I live with my mum in a small village in England.
2. I am 16 years and 4 months old.
3. I finished my G.C.S.E.s last month and will be starting my A-level
studies in September.
4. I am her only child.
5. Neither of us has any contact with my dad.
6. My mum and my dad separated when I was 4.
7. My mum has a full-time job.
8. My dad pays my mum child support for me: I know it was quite a struggle
getting him to pay, and the CSA had to be involved a few times.
9. I understand he has to pay it until my 19th birthday as long as I stay
in full-time education.
10. The amount of this child support is about £60 per week at present.
11. I have been offered an attractive weekend job (not just cash-in-hand)
that would fit in well with my coming full-time A-level studies, and give
me useful vocational training.
12. I would earn about £90 per week after expenses.
13. My mom says I must NOT accept the job.
14. The reason she gives is that the child support she receives for me will
be reduced once I work, even though it is only part-time work and I will
still be in full-time education.
15. She also says that the amount of statutory child benefit she receives
would be reduced.
16. There is no way I can get to a Citizens Advice Bureau to check this,
and the resources on the web have been no use so far. I do not want to
phone the CSA or DSS in case it makes problems.
MY QUESTIONS
A. Is my mum right about point 13.?
B. If yes, by how much would it be reduced?
C. Is she right about point 14.?
D. If yes, by how much would it be reduced?
E. Would my dad find out about the job?
F. Am I right about point 9.?
G. Can she legally stop me working?
COULD YOU HELP ME BY ANSWERING, PLEASE!!
Only answer in the newsgroup as I have posted this anonymously (it took me
weeks to work out how). I apologise if this is not the right newsgroup for
this question, and would appreciate being told where to ask. Thanks!
I would like to become a lawyer when I grow up. I would make the law a lot
more accessible over the Internet if I could!

Has it ever occured to you that you should contribute to your own
upkeep? Why should your father pay so much for the likes of you when
you obviously don't mind earning cash without him finding out in case
he cuts the amount he pays to your mother?
>I would like to become a lawyer when I grow up. I would make the law a lot

You'll make a great lawyer. You know how to take cash you don't earn
and don't deserve.
Take the job and tell your father - then you can hold your head up
instead of being the parasite that your mother obviously raised.

Excuse me. You must have read the situation very differently to how it
appeared to me. It sounded to me like the original poster was quite
happy to contribute to her own up keep and it was her mother that was
tryint to prevent her from taking a job.

I agree with your advice, as long as it doesn't leave mother and
daughter with less money overall. I don't know the legal position on
how the daughters personal income effects the father's payments,
obviously if it does effect his payments she should tell him if she
takes the job.
I can't agree with your comment about parasites, you don't know nearly
enough about the mother's and daughter's particular situation to come
to that conclusion.
Fathers do have some parental responsiblilty, though I would admit the
current situation with CSA et al is far from perfect.

"Obviously"?
I didn't write that, and I don't think that.
I want the job, and my mom wants to stop me from having it.
The only thing "obviously", is that obviously you do not read very well.
I'm amazed at how poor is the general standard of education of many adults.
I guess this reassures me somewhat, so thanks for making it "obvious". If
this job falls through, there'll be another one, if only teaching remedial
English to backward grown-ups.

That is dumb and uncalled-for, and shows you are both mean-spirited and
stupid, sort of like a net-terrorist.
And it is "obvious" that some lawyer and / or the legal system has taught
you a few lessons which still hurt. My teachers taught me to learn from my
mistakes, rather than get riled about them. I am sorry that your wounds
still hurt, but that is no excuse for abusing me, you silly man. :)

See above.
I am no parasite and I hold my head and everything else up very nicely,
thanks.

I don't know the answer to your questions - but I think you
deserve better replies than you have got so far.
Hopefully somebody who does know the answer will give
you a sensible reply if you keep checking the posts on this
thread.
The newsgroups can be rough places - but don't be put off
by that. Some of the people who post here are very well
informed and can be very helpful.
Chin up. And good luck.

I'd advise you to stop spamming uk.legal...

< Paul >
Why was this spam?
It was a post on a legal issue posted by someone who wanted an answer (not
just trolling).
Sure she has a problem with multiple-posting, but that doesn't make it
spam (unless it's intended which I highly doubt).
Don't you just love people playing usenet-cop.

That's the way to go. Teach her how to leech off a man, it's a skill

It was posted repeatedly to uk.legal *and*, in separate postings, to *6*
other newsgroups; if you do not know what is meant by "spam", I can
point you in the direction of a (free) pack of clues.
The postings I've found are as follows -- all posted to only one
newsgroup at a time. None was cross-posted:
alt.uk.law 2
alt.child-support 1
alt.support.childfree 2
uk.gov.agency.csa 2
uk.gov.social-security 3

I make that to have a BI of 15; not bad for only a few hours.

rarely (if ever) post spammage.

You can help her learn appropriate ways to treat men without being
downright nasty. I agree that she needs to tell her father and
support herself as much as possible. It sounds to me like the mother
is being greedy. You can offer suggestions and point out sexist ideas
or practices without bashing her...
But 2 get 2 the hart of the matter!
(Your clear mental disturbance!)
What do your mum do 4 sex???
I do hope she do not use you as a substitute 4 a man??????

OK so it was multiple posted to 7 newsgroups. So, that wouldn't be as
acceptable as cross-posting to 7 newsgroups. However, bear in mind that
this is a 16 year old girl and not a usenet-cop!

I am well aware of these rules and definitions, but you should take the
spirit of the rules in to account rather than the letter of them.
This is a sixteen year old girl who asked people for advice on an issue
that could result in her mother having less money to raise her with.
She didn't know where to post it to, so she chose a number of newsgroups
that sounded likely and using the only piece of software she knew how to
use, posted a message to each of them.
From most people she got helpful advice such as: "Try...
uk.gov.social-security (newsgroup) you may get good advice from there[1]",
"I agree that she needs to tell her father and support
herself as much as possible". She then posted to say she'd call the CSA
and find out (which is the best possible choice of action).
[1] - obviously this isn't good advice in your book, she'd only be
increasing her BI....

I can't believe anyone could be such an immature prat as to actually
consider complaining about a young girl trying to find an answer to a real
problem. They shouldn't be allowed to have children if that's the kind of
help they'd like them to receive in their futures....
Of course, you didn't do that, so the above doesn't apply to you......
> Learn the facts before posting crap, sunshine.
All this research you've done and you still miss the point. Yes, it was
EMP (in your opinion, in mine it wasn't excessive, but then again when
isn't usenet subjective), but allow a bit of flexibility for the young and
well-intentioned.

I like to call it opening up the issue for multiple opinion. We all know
that some posts are often ignored in certain groups.
The DSS also has a benefits helpline that should answer the question about
child benefit. While I don't know about that particular benefit, if your mum
gets any means tested benefit that includes you, that would be cut if you
start earning over a certain level.

Unfortunately, uk.legal seems to be a magnet for a few saddos who like to
abuse and insult us lawyers.

Keeps a cool head, isn't thin-skinned, can argue a point, is clearly
literate and intelligent. Yep, you could make a decent lawyer. I hope you
will go into the legal aid side of the profession. There are sponsorships
available from the LSC now once you reach the next stage after the degree,
and we need dedicated and competent lawyers.
