Typical Tory gesture politics. Prisons are to be made more unpleasant
for prisoners. Removal of the right to watch TV, no 18 certificate
films, no satellite TV sports.

An ex prisoner on the radio this morning said that the rules vary from
one prison to another and many prisons already implement those rules and
have done for ages. The main reason why he repeatedly reoffended is that
on leaving prison it was a choice between being homeless in a cardboard
box or reoffending.

The women's prisons are to be exempt from the new rules. I wonder why.
The announcement should result in a boost to the Tory vote in the
forthcoming elections. How lucky they are that prisoners still don't
have the vote.

I believe I've found the reason for shit politics, which you've touched
on here.

It applies in lots of different cases.

In this particular one, how does making life tougher for prisoners help
the law abiding? It doesn't.

How does banning gay marriage help straight couples? It doesn't.

It concerns selfishness and jealousy. The true definition of selfishness
is not wanting for oneself but wishing to deny something to others.
Jealousy is in fact often greater between the haves and have nots than
vice versa.

Making life shit for others doesn't actually offer a person any
improvement in their own life. However we're generally brought up with a
pecking order enforced on us- and thus putting someone down by default
pushes us up.

It's sad, but to some extent human nature, and to me shows the
inferiority of politicians who practise such immaturity.

I expect it's because people care more about their relative status than they
do about their absolute status (which is why we have jealousy). But if we're
going to have democracy, then you have to pander to human nature.

Yeah, that is exactly right wing thinking. They make themselves feel
better by ensuring others suffer, so that they know their lives are better.

The left do the exact same, but the other way round. Except for some
reason left wing nuters don't infect usenet or internet forums like
rightards do. Perhaps they are too busy surviving to post nasty bile all
over the place.

I saw a report on this on BBC Breakfast, 2 cellmates in Pentonville with
their cell telly in the background. I wondered what would happen if one of
them was naughty and the other was well-behaved, would the "good" prisoner
have to sit right in front of the telly with headphones to stop the other
bloke watching it?

I also heard a bit on the radio where someone reckoned that screws would
prefer everyone had a telly because there's less boredom and therefore less
trouble. But I don't see why they can't just have Freeview, no need for Sky
Sports is there? It could be argued that TV is a basic "right", but Sky
Sports is a luxury that many people on the outside can't afford.

Sky stole sport. It should be in prison.

Stole sport? I thought they just outbid everyone else for the rights to
televise most sporting events.

You might as well ask how imprisoning criminals helps the law-abiding.

And if you were able (using the faulty reasoning for which you are now
known) to conclude that it doesn't, would you be dead against the use of
prison, even for multiple murder?

That's what Hitler realised when he discovered how easy it was to make
the Germans hate the Jews. With us in the UK today it's immigrants who
have become the political tool.

It could be claimed that Sky 'stole' the best movies, too...
