Nintendo's upcoming Wii MotionPlus accessory for the revolutionary Wii
Remote controller again redefines game control, by more quickly and
accurately reflecting motions in a 3-D space. The Wii MotionPlus
accessory attaches to the end of the Wii Remote and, combined with the
accelerometer and the sensor bar, allows for more comprehensive
tracking of a player’s arm position and orientation, providing players
with an unmatched level of precision and immersion. Every slight
movement players make with their wrist or arm is rendered identically
in real time on the screen, providing a true 1:1 response in their
game play. The Wii MotionPlus accessory reconfirms Nintendo’s
commitment to making games intuitive and accessible for everyone.
Nintendo will reveal more details about the Wii MotionPlus accessory
and other topics Tuesday morning at its E3 media briefing.

You mean they're fixing the remotes? Is that an admission that they are, in
fact, a bit crap as they are?

The push/pull bits for Eledees and Wack&Ziki are particularly
annoying. Hopefully this'll be a sort of in-place upgrade that will
just make better movement info available to the console, rather than
needing games rewritten for it.

And hopefully cheap.

tbh, if it's an upgrade like that, it should be free, nevermind cheap.

E3 2008: Wii Remote Gets More Motion
Nintendo will reveal the MotionPlus accessory at this year's show.
by Craig Harris and Mark Bozon

July 14, 2008 - Players wondering if we'd ever see a true 1:1
experience on Wii need to wonder no more, as Nintendo announced today
a new plug-in peripheral for the Wii remote, currently called Wii
MotionPlus. Details are sparse so far, but Nintendo revealed the first
snippets of information in a press release this morning. The following
statement is -- in its entirety -- Nintendo's announcement of
MotionPlus for Wii:

"Nintendo's upcoming Wii MotionPlus accessory for the revolutionary
Wii Remote controller again redefines game control, by more quickly
and accurately reflecting motions in a 3-D space. The Wii MotionPlus
accessory attaches to the end of the Wii Remote and, combined with the
accelerometer and the sensor bar, allows for more comprehensive
tracking of a player's arm position and orientation, providing players
with an unmatched level of precision and immersion. Every slight

What we don't know, however, is how exactly MotionPlus will work with
nunchuk controls, as the peripheral would need some sort of pass-
through in order to give 1:1 motion to titles requiring analog
control. The first shot above shows a small plug in the bottom of the
attachment, which looks to be covering just such port, but we'll wait
on Nintendo to give the final confirmation. Will we see first-person
shooters that can make use of this technology? Will LucasArts find a
way to adapt the upcoming Clone Wars game to include true 1:1
lightsaber technology, or could Nintendo beat them to it with a pack-
in Link's Sword Fighting game (or news of a new Zelda Wii) to showcase
MotionPlus? Will some sort of future "Wii-mote 2.0" automatically
include MotionPlus, removing the need for an additional add-on
peripheral? We'll have to wait and see how exactly the new technology
works, and all signs point to Nintendo's keynote just 24 hours from
now.

The way the release is written makes it sound like a proper
motion-tracking system, all the wiimote has is some accelerometers and
a video camera that allows the Wii to figure out its orientation when
it's pointing at the screen. If it is a true 3D tracking device then
that would make the Wii remote into what you lot seem to think it's
always been! Time will tell I suppose.

It does make me wonder though: has any optional peripheral ever been
successful? I guess there are games that require a nunchuck, but since every
Wii owner is guaranteed to have one of those it's less of a problem.

I mean which publisher is going to insist that you have this?

That N64 ramchip thingy was used in a number of titles, although by then
the 64 was already on the wane. But still, almost all 'main' games that
came out after that made use of the extra ram (4MB?)

Well I dare say the first game or two to use it will have one in the
pack -not necessarily free of course. It would be nice if it was
continued to be used after that, but your main point is a valid one
-very few optional hardware upgrades give long & fruitful return on
investment.

I wonder if there's a possibility that existing games already have the
capability to take advantage of it though?
...I mean, if the software is waiting for a position fix from the remote
and updates the screen based on that, it _could_ be possible that this
device will simply smooth-out the movement ...in some games at least,
perhaps.

Dual Shock on the PS1, maybe? There were certainly games that required it,
and a lot of later games were clearly designed for it, even if they still
supported the old pad.

There's obviously stuff like Eye Toy, guitars, dance mats, the Singstar
microphone and whatnot that seem to have been popular enough to support a
number of games. Not quite the same thing, though.

That's actually a good example. It did ride on the whole analogue control
wave that was happening at the time though, and it did appear relatively
late into the life of the PS.

This just seems a bit too early. I'm just glad I've not bought any extra
remotes yet!

It's going to be bundled in with Wii Sports II which is guaranteed to
sell bucketloads. It's similar to the Wii Fit board - enough people will
buy it to make it worth developing games that use it, to give them
something to buy once they've got bored with the original game.
