Why are Wii ISO's almost always 4.38gb when the actual game can be as little
as 0.1gb? Is the ISO just padded out to the capacity of the DVD?
Yes.

It's to piss off the pirates who are downloading them.

My computer runs at 3.5MHz and I'm proud of that
I thought USB Loader ripped a straight ISO from the disc? Many of my
ripped games are only a few hundred MB. Don't know what it is in Wii's
case, but Dreamcast games would always fill the extra space with blank
data to push the game data to the outside of the disc so the laser
didn't have to do as much work. Could be the same thing.

No, it doesn't work like that. I just copied off all my games (resizing
the partition, and I figured it'd be faster than re-ripping everything
again afterwards), and although the size on hard drive varies all the
extracted iso's are 4.37GB. Not what I expected, had to do a fair bit
of space clearing.

No, it just rips the data. Well, it does now. When I installed Wii Play at
the weekend it was only 90MB and took about 5 seconds.

Yes but I think if you create an ISO from a game ripped to hard disc,
it creates a 4 gig image, as that's what the system requires.

I put Wii Play to a USB drive it was about 170mb.

That's probably true, but I was replying about usbloader, which doesn't
created a 4 gig image (at least the more recent versions don't).

What did you use to get that figure? USB Loader GX told me 0.09GB.
USB Loader 1.5. Will double check later, but I am sure it said 0.69gb.
What's USB Loader?
A handy thing that lets you slurp your Wii disks onto a SD card or USB
hard drive and play (most) games directly from there.
It seems to be based on Nintendo's "Wii in a kiosk" software, hacked
around a fair bit and with various pretty front ends taped on.
http://usbloadergx.koureio.net/ is a decent one. You need some method
of running homebrew to get started.

"Perfect satisfaction, Mr. Gamgee," said Frodo.
I've spent two sessions trying to get this loader thing working and
failed both times. This displeases me.

The very first version I tried didn't create a 4 gig image, and that
was ages ago! As for actual ISOs though, they all do seem to be 4 gig
and usbloader creates a 4 gig iso from a tiny game, so it looks like
it's a requirement from the system itself.
That reminds me, the Wii's not been turned on for about 4 months at
least now.. Must try and play some games tonight. All it really does
now is recharge the AAA NiMH batteries in the remotes which I use in
my bluetooth keyboard!
You see, this is why I got stuck. That page could really do with some
actual instructions.
This is the page I referred to when I set mine up:
http://www.mikeandheth.com/games/109-store-and-load-usb-wii-system-menu-4.html
Not been there in ages as I've never had any problems and because I mainly
use my 360 at the mo
But that's four times bigger than you just said it was?!

Took me ages to get mine working as well. Had to downgrade my IOS, then
upgrade it again, or something, to get any joy with it.

Thanks for the link - a great guide and I finally got it working
tonight.
