World of Warcraft (PC) - 50! Finally! So, where should I be questing now? I've
got a few yellows and oranges in UGC but I'm sort of sick of there having
spent most of yesterday grinding dinosaurs there for webbed scales. Also,
Devilsaurs are to henceforth be known as Cuntosauruses.

Defcon (PC) - This is scary. And tense. And moody. And surprisingly compelling
for what appears to be such a simple game. And at a tenner, you can hardly
argue. A bunch of my friends spent most of the weekend playing it. The AI
is very, very good.

Kameo (X360) - The structure is a little odd - let you play for about half an
hour with full transformation abilities, then take them all off you and /then/
give you a tutorial? Odd. Also, can they fuck off with the constant
interruptions from that damned book? Other than that, when you're actually
playing, it's fun.

Table Tennis (X360) - Won a tournament! Go me. That Japanese lass doesn't
half look smug when she wins a point.

Geometry Wars (X360) - So, you say you can score more than 100,000 points on
this? That's clearly lies.

Play - absolutely sod all at the moment.

Want - so many things I want. Splinter Cell Double Agent, Tiger 07,
Crackdown, Call of Duty 3, Wii

Bin - Wii. It does not factor in my finances for this year. Probably get
in January if I can find one.

Okami (PS2) - I think I'm at around the 30 hour mark now, and there still
seems to be a fair bit to go. I'm still finding myself amazed by how good
the graphics are in this. It's utterly stunning, with some wonderful
background and character designs. Twilight Princess has a lot to live up
to.

Sonic (360) - Given it's a pretty old build, this shows promise, I think.
There are obvious control and framerate problems, but if you do the level
as the designers intended, it all flows quite nicely, and gets pretty fast
in places. I wonder, given the reactions, whether releasing show demos
(which are bound to be early, partially broken things) to the public is
likely to do more harm than good. Maybe this "Bringing it Home" thing
should stick to videos?

Possibly Mercury Meltdown. Most places seem to have it down as being out on
Friday, but Woolies in Sheffield have it out already. I'm not paying 35
quid for it, though.

Some more DS games. Don't seem to have got much for a while. I'm having to
do things like reading books and talking to people to pass the time on the
train in the mornings. The new Mario vs Donkey Kong looks like it might be
good. Also Dragon Quest: Rocket Slime.

Doom (360 XBLA) - Played through episode 1 on Ultra Violence. Still a
cracking game although the weapon changing is cack.

Dead Rising - Zo and the postie came through so played this a bit but
not as much as I could thanks to constant power cuts. What I did play
impressed me a lot though. The machinegun I found in the demo came in
handy for dealing with Carlito.

Elite - Laptop - With the power going off and on all weekend I played a
fair bit of this on my laptop and the scope of it still amazes me when
you consider it was all crammed into 32KB of Ram on the BBC. Got me a
military laser now and fugitive status so there's killing ahoy.

Company of Heroes (PC) - Bloody brilliant. Visceral, intense, stressful,
fun. The defense of Cantern (sp?) mission is absolute sodding genius. In
fact, the whole game is the work of some incredible and possibly alien
minds. I'm actually using all the different abilities and units and not
just dragging a box over all my units and sending them at the enemy.
Snipers are godlike and awful. Artillery is terrifying. The retreat
button actually gets used. Machine guns are death-spitting bastards of
the highest order, but oh so vulnerable to anything other than a frontal
infantry assault. Best bit? When you try and tell a squad what to do in
the middle of a firefight and they snap back with "I'm a little fucking
busy here!" Oh, sorry.

Defcon (PC) - Played tutorial. Then tried Company of Heroes. Didn't play
Defcon again.

Half-Life Episode One (PC) - After successfully defending Cantern on my
second go, I took a breather from CoH and finished this off. Need
Episode two now, please. I may well end up getting it on the 360, just
as an excuse to play HL2 again. (Thing about HL2 is that I remember the
brilliant bits very clearly, but have to work on remembering the
annoying bits. Like that endless bloody hovercraft ride.)

Dark Messiah of Might and Magic Demo (PC) - Downloaded from Steam while
playing HL2. Looks lovely, plays okay, but kicking is a bit hit and
miss. I think it might be because my PC pauses for a split second when
doing some things (loading sound effects?), so when I kick someone the
game seems to pause. Not for long, but enough to throw me off. Anyway,
performance issues mean I probably won't bother with the full game. Just
bad enough to be annoying.

Doom (360) - Best controls since pre-95 keyboards. Hurrah! It still is
the best game ever. Sorry Oblivion, sorry GTA, sorry Mario, Doom beats
you all. I love it so much. It's just about perfect. Closer than any
other game ever, certainly.

42 All-Time Classics (DS) - Stamp mode is one of the worst things I have
ever played in my life. (And yet not even the worst thing I've played
this week, due to the utter stinking shitness of the Sonic demo. But
more on that later.) I'm rubbish at strategy games, don't understand
half of them and made random moves in loads of games just to get through
them. I didn't enjoy myself one little bit and yet couldn't stop playing
Stamp mode until I'd finished the bloody thing. Anyway, despite pretty
poor presentation and some weird AI, some of the games on this
compilation might be worth playing for extended periods. But Stamp mode
will probably be giving me nightmares for some years to come. Awful. So
this is a PLAY for the cart but a big fat BIN for the Stamp mode.

Sonic The Hedgehog (360) - Words cannot begin to describe how awful this
game is. Or can they? Okay, imagine you get into work to find your boss
at the door with a cardboard box of your belongings telling you to go
home. Forever. So you walk home in the rain, stepping on dogshit twice
on the way. On your doormat is a letter from the bank saying they've
discovered errors in your account dating back twelve years and you owe
them $57,583.10, payable immediately. Annoyed, you kick the cat, which
lands at an awkward ankle and breaks its neck. It's yelping in pain and
confusion, trying the drag itself across the floor by its chin, so you
put it out of its misery with a heavy book. Just then the doorbell rings
and it's your wife's parents come to collect the book they lent you.
Which you're holding in your hands. Covered in cat brains. And an
eyeball. With a dead cat lying on the hallway carpet behind you. They
turn in disgust and leave, their Volvo running over your prize-winning
flowers in their haste to exit your driveway. Then you go upstairs to
find your wife to tell her about your day and find she's been brutally
murdered; her brains - looking not unlike the cat's - spread all over
your bed. You call the police and they arrest you and beat you in the
cells and feed you food they've all pissed in, but by mid-evening come
to the conclusion that you're not a murderer and it was all the work of
a gang of seventeen men she had been sleeping with every day for several
months while you were at work. The police therefore simply charge you
with animal cruelty and release you on bail. You get home to find you've
been burgled because the police investigators left your front door open.
All that's left is your TV and Xbox 360. And a tightly coiled turd in
the middle of your living room floor. So you sit down on the floor, away
from the turd, download the Sonic demo and play it and it's the worst
thing that's happened to you all day. That's how bad it is.

PJ's King Kong (360) I have this for the original xbox and never
finished it - had a mad desire to pick it up on 360 (just for the AP's)
and spent most of the weekend playing it. I'm about 75% through and it's
perfect to curl up on the sofa to - quietly engrossing, not too taxing
and it looks quite pretty, but obviously isn't pushing the machine very
hard. It's a good buy cheap on amazon market place.

Lots of stuff from X'06, but particularly Crackdown, Halo 3, PGR4,
Bioshock, Banjo (as long as they don't put a sodding board game in at
the end of the game like they did on the N64) Assassin's Creed, Alan

I agree :)

Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved Demo (X360) - downloaded this on friday
night and it's fun however before I even consider shelling out some
points to buy the whole thing I've got to survive the demo's time limit

Marble Blast Ultra (X360) - thought the one thing my 360 lacked was a
game to annoy the crap out of me and make me snap at anyone who disturbs
me causing me to bollocks up my attempt, so I bought this. I love it.

Lego Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy (X360) - completed a couple more
levels of this and spent some points on the XBLA for the LSW characters.

DAoC didn't even get a look in this weekend as any time spent in front
of the PC was spent ripping CDs to go on my file server for streaming
audio down to my 360.

I'm 99% sure you can turn off the book hints.

Anyway, I played:

Doom (XBLA) - I officially can't play Doom. On the fourth chapter of
the first level on Hurt Me Plenty. Can't do it. Would be much easier if
there was a radiation suit and a decent supply of shotgun shells.

Pro Evolution Soccer 5 (360BC) - Yes, it's better than WC06. It's also
annoying as hell. Why, why, WHY when I pass a ball to a player can the
receiving player not be moved at all? The cursor switches to said
player but he can't be moved, he stands to where the ball is going, so
if the pass is any longer than 5 yards it gets intercepted. It's been
there since the first ISS Pro game ten years ago, and it fucked me off
then. FIX IT. I expect *complete* control of whichever player has an
arrow above his head. Also, please replace the commentary team, give
the game its first graphical overhaul since PES on PS2, do the offside
rule properly, put in a proper camera view, make the tackling work,
make the animations blend and add first-touch control and you've got
the game it should be. It seems every year Konami take an almost great
game and tweak the things that there's nothing wrong with instead of
sorting out the stuff that's screaming out to be fixed.

Call Of Duty 2 (360) - Split-screen deathmatch with two mates, one of
whom has finished the game on veteran and one of whom has never played
it before. They both annihilated me.

Sonic The Hedgehog demo (360) - So shit. So, so, so shit. Can't stop.
It owns me.

F.E.A.R. demo (360) - They've taken the PC version and made the
graphics worse, substantially below par for a 360 game. Bah. Also
inability to move whilst crouching/leaning without some complex finger
acrobatics makes it very hard to take the stealth approach I adopted in
the PC version. Crouch and leaning functions should have to be
toggleable by law.

Lego Star Wars 2 demo (360) - This is even more annoying than PES5. The
camera is even worse than Sonic, and the second 'room' you enter has a
bit where you assemble lots of Lego to make a big walking tank thingy.
First time I played it, I managed it without any trouble. Every time
since I've walked around big piles of Lego, holding B to try and make
it assemble but nothing happens. Switched to OWK to see if I had to use
the force to move said Lego before assembling but that didn't work, no
idea how I did it the first time, and the 'use this character to open
this door' just feels like its been tacked on to make the game last
longer, annoying. Watched Mary play it, she got to aforementioned
tank-assembly bit, spent 15 minutes running around pressing every
button at every item with every character before getting up and turning
it off. Shame, as it looks great (but the lack of voices is stupid),
although the opening room where you have to use the force for about 5
seconds to move some stairs but every time you get half-way through you
get shot by one of the seemingly infinitely spawning stormtroopers and
it resets the force is fucking annoying, and it could be a lot of fun,
but it just doesn't seem to work.

Watching trailers (360) - Lots of needage (see Want)

> Want
> ----
>
> Nearly everything at X06, pretty much.

What he said. In particular:

HD-DVD drive. Seems very good value at £130 with the remote I've been
meaning to buy for ages and a film I've been meaning to buy for ages.
I'll see what HD-DVDs are available and at what price when it comes out
though.

Assassin's Creed. Wow. That gameplay demonstration blew me away. Much needage.

Lost Planet. I loved the E3 demo, and everything I've seen at TGS and
X06 would suggest it's been improved substantially since then. That
trailer they sneaked onto the Bringing It Home section yesterday was
just brilliant.

Team Fortress 2. Just to marvel at the graphics.

Portal. The trailer made my head hurt. I can just see myself spending
hours making myself spin around into infinite.

Pro Evo 6, because it's Pro Evo, but it very much is Pro Evo, and
therefore not wanted as much as:

FIFA 07, which looks like a whole new game. I won't know until I've
played it, but from watching the big trailer as well as seeing some
actual gameplay footage, it looks like for the first time ever (FNR3
excepted) the EA PR 'look at our magic new tech!' machine might
actually deliver on something.

Alan Wake, which has seemlingly completely re-written the book on what
can be done with current graphics technology.

Sonic The Hedgehog. For some completely inexplicable reason.

Brothers In Arms: Hell's Highway. If they fix the frame-rate.

and of course, Guitar Hero 2. Because it's Guitar Hero. In HD. With
digital sound. And an Explorer. And downloadable songs.

> Bin
> ---

Forza 2 and GTHD. If PGR3 and TDU can successfully recreate car
interiors with great cockpit views, why can't the 'real driving
simulators' manage it? I don't care how good the outside of the car
looks, because anyone who plays the game so they can actually see it is
a 'tard anyway. You drive a car from the inside, so I expect that to be
given at least the same amount of attention and care as making sure the
transparencies on the fucking headlights are convincing.

Zo, who is having a 'frustrated and angry with games' session this
morning, it would seem.

For me, one sign of how good a game is and how deeply you get into a
particular level is the speed with which you can restart a level. It
becomes so natural after a while that if you think about it you fuck it
up. The designers know you'll be doing the same level time and time
again until go get it perfect so they make the procedure for a restart
as simple and easy as possible.

Tony Hawks 2 was like that and so is Marble Blast Ultra.

TBH you should be able to get at least 250,000 points within the demo

you do to be able to compete on the friends leaderboard. Just buy it :)

Yes it is cheap, but the lack of HDMI is worrying, as there is an
agreement to flag content streaming through analogue connections to curb
the output quality to a level indistinguishable from standard DVD. Sure,
it's up to the producers whether they want to switch it on or not, and
it has to be clearly marked on the boxes if they have, but I suspect
that a lot of studios will downgrade to this once the devices become
more prevalent in the marketplace, and some have already said so -
making it £129 of pointlessness in my mind.

see below, lifted from wikipedia

Commercialized HD DVDs integrate content protection technology specified
by AACS LA (Advanced Access Content System License Authority). "Audio
Watermark Protection" is also being considered by AACS for use on HD
DVD. If Watermark is adopted by AACS, all HD DVD players will have a
sensor that listens for inaudible audio watermarks in the soundtrack of
movies. Studios may insert this invisible mark in the soundtracks of
theatrical motion pictures. If an HD DVD player does not detect the
invisible mark, it means the disc is playing back a copy made from a
theatrical print (probably from illegal camcording), and will cause the
player to refuse to play the disc. The mark is made by varying the
waveform of speech and music in a regular pattern to convey a digital
code. These variations are too subtle to be heard by the human ear.
Another variation of this system can be used to prevent the playback of
discs created by using a camcorder and microphone on a home
entertainment center playing a legitimate disc purchased by a consumer.
This variation for home entertainment utilizes a watermark that differs
from the cinema mark in that it is permitted in normal, signed ROM
discs, but generally not permitted on recordable discs.

In addition, HD DVD players must follow AACS guidelines pertaining to
outputs over analog connections. This is set by a flag called the Image
Constraint Token (ICT), which restricts the resolution for analog
outputs without HDCP to 960×540. The decision to set the flag to
restrict output ("down-convert") is left to the content provider. Warner
Pictures is a proponent of ICT, and it is expected that Paramount and
Universal will implement down-conversion as well [10]. As of March 2006,
5 of the 6 studios releasing HD DVD content have announced they will not
use ICT/down-conversion for the time being [11]. AACS guidelines require
that any title that implements the ICT must clearly state so on the
packaging.

At present it seems there is no Region Coding on HD DVD titles, which
means Europeans should be able to play disks bought in the United States.

Yep, it's really good.

Although I worry now that it'll just seem like a less-good sci-fi

I read everyone raving about Lego Star Wars I and II, downloaded the demo
of II, spent 15 minutes wondering what the fuck I was supposed to be doing
("Droids can open this door!" - no they fucking can't, no matter how many
times I stand Artoo in front of it and press B) and eventually decided it
was just broken. Poor.

I think they left it for the viewer to decide on the ending.

So now that it's region-locked, unlike DS, are you planning to only buy
PAL games, or to buy 3 seperate consoles, or buy all the games but
without the facility to play them?

I was stuck with two - the Zenith, and the La Fuerza. I bought the Zenith
from Foriegn Power, and the La Fuerza you can get if you do the Los Carnales

The Unemployment Game (RL): It sucks. I thought I would actually be glad to
be redundant but I'm missing work already. There's no point getting a new
job yet because I'm (hopefully) heading off to Australia in six weeks.
Daytime TV seems to be some sort of sick joke and the cartoons on Cartoon
Network aren't funny.

Lego Star Wars II (PS2): Bug-ridden piece of shit! There seems to be no way
to complete the Dagobah level on Ep VI because of the flawed map layout and
my characters getting stuck from time to time. I think I may have to try a
walkthrough because although I complete what I need to complete, I end up
back at Yoda's house wondering what the hell I do next. Logic dictates that
I should head back to the swamp at the start of the level, but only R2D2
seems to be able to do this, and he's about as much use as a solar power
generator in a dark cave. The characters whose skills I actually need (Yoda
and Luke Skywalker) keep getting stuck.

Oblivion (PC): Running unusually slow so I stopped playing. I'll need to
invesatigate what I've done that's caused this although I have a feeling the
new nVidia GeForce 6800 drivers are to blame as my desktop has started
stuttering at times since I've installed them. Yet...

Company of Heroes Demo (PC): ...runs unusually fine even with all the detail
turned up. Hmmm. Great demo though, even if I do suck are RTS games.

Company of Heroes (PC): To arrive in the post pronto. After flipping a coin,
I decided on this being the game I'm claiming from Eurogamer.

You am me! I finished work on Friday, looking to fly out to Oz in a

You get all the tutorials, and single campaign and skirmish options. There's
not a great deal considering the file size, but then considering that it
took me over an hour to beat the skirmish mission and the tutorial options
are incredibly in-depth (more or less set me up for the full game), there's
still plenty to get a good feel for the game.

It has to be said that the graphics and physics are incredible though, and
virtually everything is desctructible. Also, the fact you can use
freshly-created crater walls and wreckage to hide behind etc, really adds to
the realism.

I'm hoping to spend the second leg of my trip in the outback (I'm out there
for ten weeks), but I've been advised to get vaccinations for diseases like
malaria because of the high frequency of mosquitoes even in the cities.

Definitely weird this morning, waking up a 7am and realising that I didn't
need to be up at all! My biggest fear though is that I might actually end up
getting used to it...

> So - it's wall to wall Warcraft at the moment :)
>

I thought about doing Warcraft when i built my current PC last year but
things kept getting in the way. Now there doesn't seem to be much point
because of Australia. I might consider it though when I return next year.

But then again, the XBox 360 is looking more and more tempting by the day
but I have to hold myself back - my redundancy pay is paying for the
flights!

More worryingly though, over the last few weeks I've been finding myself
getting back into anime again and I'm currently enjoying a fansubbed version
of One Piece (it leaves the godawful 4Kids version on Toonami standing - It
was NEVER a kids cartoon) and finally getting around to watching Ghost In
The Shell: Stand Alone Complex. All this free time...

Paul.

I don't know how you can stand the thought of being stuck with PAL-only.
_Especially_ in a locked-up setting, I can't imagine NOE's track record
getting better any time soon.

Games like Animal Crossing and most-things-quirky usually have like
3mths-to-a-year release date difference (*if* they get released at all over
here).
In the few times to date that Europe gets things first, the release date gap
(on things that are actually any _good_) is more like a matter of weeks.

42 All-Time Classics (DS) - Sounds more like a cheesy K-Tel compilation album
than a DS game. Anyway it has some great games, it has some crap games, it
also has one of the most tedious and torturous endurance tests ever in a
video game going under the name of Stamp Mode. So crap yet so compelling in
that I have *got* to complete it. only two levels to go now (thank God).

Call of Duty 2 (360) - Returned to this several months after I first
completed it to begin the push through veteran mode. God, it's intense and
it really is a whole different game at this level. Excellent.

Tomb Raider: Legend (360) - I've gone through it twice now and so spent some
time failing to do any time trials, by about 30 seconds on average.

Arsenal, Reading, Newcastle, West Ham, Watford, Charlton, Chelsea and
hopefully in just under two weeks time, Spurs. Early days I know, but Martin
O'Neill appears to be a miracle worker.

Hinterlands is 40-50 and I've cleared it out already, I think. Winterspring is

She finished it this afternoon, so it can't be epically long, but given
how much she's been playing it, it seems like it's a reasonable length.

PLAY

Loco Roco (PSP) - Finally finished it this lunch time. Great little
game, although I must confess to getting slightly bored of it near the
end. Nice and unchallenging.

Test Drive Unlimited (360) - Played far too much of this lately.
Finally got the explorer achievement on Sunday and I've suddenly run
out of steam with it. Not bad though - about 40 hours of gameplay so
far and I'm sure I'll go back to it from time to time.

GRAW (360) - Just started really. Looking forward to some non-racing
gameplay for a change.

Narbacular Drop (PC) - Apparently this is the game Portal was inspired
by. It's pretty rough around the edges but it makes my head hurt with
its portal cleverness...

WANT

Plenty - not changed since last week though...

BIN

Lego Star Wars II (360)
Just grinding through the last gold bricks now. The character and minikit
bonus levels for each episode were quite fun (rack up a million studs in as
short a time as possible), but the super-story mode (complete all chapters,
back to back, within an hour) seems a little daunting for one sitting.
Also, ghost characters make the 'undefeated' achievements rather less of a
challenge. :)

FIFA WC06 (360)
On reflection, it's still pretty poor. Too easy to score, but still
virtually impossible to play proper football. I don't think I'll be
bothering with challenge mode.

NBA Live 06 (360)
I got this from Zo in exchange for Hitman, and only actually got round to
playing it yesterday. I thought I'd dive straight into the season mode, but
then saw how many fixtures were involved, so I thought I'd let it sim the
main part of the season, and I'd just play the playoffs. Imagine my surprise
when, at the end of the season, I was showered with achievements (best
coach, best record in regular season, etc), so just as an exercise in bloody
mindedness I thought I'd see how many of the achievements I could get
without actually playing the game. The answer? 6/12 achievements, for a
grand total of 645 points (and with a bit more patience, I expect the MVP
achievement worth a further 150 points would have come). Utterly ridiculous.
Still, once I'd finished being disgusted at the stupidity of that, and
actually played the game, I found it to be a good looking and nicely
balanced basketball game. Will definitely be playing more.

Agreed. However, much Pro Evo playage this weekend has led me to
believe that there currently isn't a decent football game in existence.
Contrary to popular belief, Pro Evo is utter shite. And so is World
Cup. Bah.

1 achievement. It's worth 500 points, and is the most valuable
achievement on Xbox Live. And it's fucking hard. I've spent many, many
hours on it and am nowhere near.

GTA:SA (PS2) - it's a bit alarming the way I almost seem to play this

reason... to be honest I'm a bit annoyed that I did this, as I thought
if I ever replayed a GTA game it'd be Vice City. Anyway, while I got
out of Los Santos quite quickly that was still a real grind, and
having played that bit twice now I think it must be (aside from a few
good missions) one of the worst ever starts to a decent game. I also

Grind Session (PS1) and Disney's Extreme Skate Adventure (PS2) to
arrive. Apparently the Disney one isn't as awful as you'd imagine, and
at least has the sense to include some Toy Story levels.

Transformers (PS2), which looks reasonable enough having tried a
(horribly short) demo. It does seem a bit MDK-with-robots though,
which makes me wonder if it gets similarly impossible towards the end.

Getting the box for Sega Classics Collection (PS2) but not the actual
disc - guess how I got that Transformers demo. :-) The seller does
claim to be sorting this out though.

A nasty saving bug in the version of VR on Sega Classics Collection,
or rather, one which could have been nasty had I actually received it.
I read about this one in the FAQ for it on GameFAQs - apparently it's
ok if you run (and save from) VR first, rather than any of the other
games.

It is the Moby Dick of the achievement world, to be sure. If I had found the
game enjoyable, I'd have happily ploughed the required hours in to get it,
but given how I feel about the game it would be pure punishment, and even
I'm not that motivated by achievements. :)

If "enjoying it" means swearing at the game constantly and snapping at
anyone who disturbs you just at the vital moment when you're about to
complete it/take the lead and your marble ends up falling off...yes I am

I can't say I've got a lot to complain about as far as the result goes - we
played poorly, and they were very well organised. Still, though, it's bloody
Colchester. That quaint little team from down the road with a cattle shed
ground, where all the rubbish old Ipswich players go to see out the end of
their careers. The world has gone mad.
