Castlevania discussion seems to have gotten lost in another thread, and since
there seem to be a few of us playing assorted Castlevania titles at the
moment, I thought I'd start one here. Anyway.

So I completed COTM last night:
http://lofi-gaming.org.uk/diary/2007/01/castlevania-circle-of-moon-gba_30.php

Which is the second CV game so far this year :)

I've moved on to Harmony of Dissonance already, and put about an hour and half
in so far. I'm a little jarred with it actually, as I wrote in my diary:
http://lofi-gaming.org.uk/diary/2007/01/castlevania-harmony-of-dissonance-gba.php

"And so it's out with Circle of the Moon, and in with Harmony of Dissonance.
I've played it for almost an hour and a half already, and I'm enjoying it.
There's something not quite right about it, though. Maybe it's the way Juste
(your character) has a bizarre blue glow and shadow trails. Maybe it's the
fact I had to start again completely powerless. It could be that L and R
perform dashes rather than special moves. Or perhaps it's that you don't have
DSS (like Circle, which is effectively the same as the souls in Dawn of Sorrow
for the DS). It could even be that you don't feel like you're actually in a
castle for much of it (so far), with strange rooms and caves and caverns and
things.

But in other ways, it's more like Castlevania. Specifically, some of the
baddies from Super Castlevania IV reappear, like the bone snake thing, and the
bone towers (which were in Circle, bit in a bastardised form). You collect
money too, and can manually "twirl" your whip.

And then it has bits like Dawn. Like a shop. And great added bits like the
ability to quick save anywhere. You can sort of tell it was made between the
SNES and DS games, anyway.

So to the game itself proper then. I've killed two bosses already. There was a
bat cluster, and a big skeleton with a large sword who I whipped in the
kneecaps. I've seen about 25% of the map, collected the Ice and Fire books,
loads of armour upgrades, and assorted relics including Lizard Tail. I'm
really missing the double-tap-to-run and double-jump powers though. I'm sure
they'll become available at some point.

I'm saved up near a boss door for now. That's for next time's play, though."

Any news on a date for SOTN for XBLA?

I never really got into the Castlevania titles past Super. They were all too
RPGy for me, when I just wanted a hack and slash platformer.

I know what you mean - I find the outlines around everything really
quite annoying as well, but other than that can't think of anything I'd
change about it. It does seem quite short (I'm about 50% through I
think) but pretty tricky in places. Sadly, my enjoyment of it has been
interrupted by the joy which is Children of Mana, which is currently
taking over my train-journey-time.

I liked Harmony. It's one of the few games I've done 100% of. All the
map, all souls collected (and what a bitch some of those were), all
weapons made. Loved it.

I also finished Children of Mana, nice graphics, okay storyline,
mindless slashing. Which character did you choose? I'm working on Mage
Knight now.

So do you not have Children of Mana yet? You should. It's on the DS! It's
a game! On the DS! Surely that's enough reason for you to buy it?

Not only that, but it's unbelievably ACE! I was a bit unsure cos I'm not
a big fan of real time combat in my RPGs, but it's done really nicely. I
also have Lost Magic sitting on my desk cos it was preowned in Game for
6 quid.

I have 15 or more DS games I want to buy. Sadly, I don't have the money, and
have a big pile of other games unplayed which make me feel guilty.

I'm due an overtime payment from work this month, so I expect I'll splurge.

It's fun, but I wouldn't say it was acesexbest or anything. It's a nicely
done action RPG, but it's a bit simplistic and it does get repetitive after
a point. But it looks gorgeous and it's fun and brainless and well worth
a punt for the 15quid or so it cost me from VG+.

There's an additional problem in that I've been "trialing" many of the games I
want (e.g. FFIII, Yoshi, Hotel Dusk, Mario 3 on 3, Kirby, Castlevania), and
now I want them even more :(

Lostmagic is done (presumably, as I've not played CoM) a lot less
nicely. About 6 quids worth of nice though, at an estimate.

Then buy them - self gratification through the medium of material
gains is good for the soul.

If I could float around your head whispering "buy themmmm buy themmmm"

That pretty much reiterates the review I read of it which called it a
mindlessly boring dungeon crawler. Probably still better than staring

I wouldn't say it was mindlessly boring. It's not the deepest game ever, but
as dungeon crawlers go, it's pretty decent.

There's one area with a small gap you can slide through - up on the top

Been through there, and killed a Boss in there too. But I didn't get any

I'm still obsessively trying to "colour in" all the bits of the map that
are visible so far. It becomes so much of an obsession with me that if I
come across an outdoor area that I can't get to the top of, I get really
really pissed off :)

The one thing I hate is when you're in a room that gets filled in the
map, but has an item or two in a part you can't access at the time.
Remembering where that (occasionally important) item was an hour or two
later can be monumentally painful.

This is another way that Circle was better than Harmony - all the items were
in rooms you either could reach, or not. They were never in a part of the map
you could reach enough to "fill it in" but not get the item.

Also, are there any wall-breaking secret rooms in Harmony? I've whipped every
single wall so far and found nothing :(

In PoR, you can drop up to three markers on each map as reminders for
things you want to go back to. Which is kind of nice.

170%! ACES.

I'm actually LOVING HoD now. Once you get some decent power-ups and armour,
and some keys to make travelling around the castle a lot quicker, it really
improves. Still not as fantastic as Circle or Dawn, but aces nonetheless.

I only have about three GB games with boxes so I'm not too fussed about boxes.
However, I have just found out that a later stage on this game, which is not
unlike the spinny killy run-up-stairs bit from SCIV, is virtually impossible.

I thought that the popular method was to order DS cases, which have a nice
GBA compartment. A couple of folks online have created custom case inserts
based on the cardboard GBA boxes that fit nicely into these. On the other
hand, I'm too cheap to spend money on pretty cases. :)

I think I died there once. Second time I probably had a stronger spell
instead (lightning doll?), I'd been relying solely on the apprentice
witches' cat until that point. Attacks seemed hard to avoid, so I made
it a "just thrash at it before it kills me" thing.

Ten minutes?!?! Christ, I doubt I spent a minute up against him, I
think in his second form I could hardly take any hits either (hence
first death). Just hit him with whatever your strongest soul weapon is,
then hit him with a weapon when you run out of magic. As for changing
weapons and stuff, I never used any spears at all (too slow), generally
stuck to the faster swords throughout the game (is the Hrunting one of
those?). What level are you at?

Hrunting is the poison sword like a rapier, so yeah, it's fast. Spears are my
most powerful horizontal weapon (ones like grenades are useless as they roll
under him). I'm on level 21 now, but was on 18 or so when I fought him
originally.

I was probably in the mid 20s when I did it (both attempts). You really
need a soul that is a powerful multi hit, the witches cat is superb for
that as it can get 3 or 4 hits in, and when that becomes too low powered
move to something like the lightning doll soul.

I've got Witches Cat, but the problem is that it just runs along the ground,

Jump and fire, that way on the bigger enemies you can easily get it to
hit 3 or 4x. However, I think it was Death when I ditched the cat for
the lightning (for bosses).

In fact, those two and one other you can get very late on (a sort of
laser from a skeleton, uses less MP than lightning doll) are just about
the only attacking souls I used in the whole game.

I hate you :-(

On the other hand - I still have to THREE to complete, so ner. And I'm
going to play through SC4 again as well.

And I'm going to order CotM and AoS at the end of the month. And
probably the PS2 ones as well. I have much CV needness.

Yes. I liked it, but IIRC the PAL version is sucky because the cut out
the voice select (as in, in the US version you could play with the
Japanese voice cast with subtitles).

Nope, not on the NTSC version at least. Being a PS2 game, this one has,
like, proper cutscenes and stuff, so it probably wouldn't work properly
without the voices anyway.

Of course, I could always just be imagining that they removed the voice
select from the PAL version, but given that Sony Europe normally demands
that such things are removed I'm pretty certain this is the case.

After a nice Mario 64 session I started up Castlevania IV on my Wii last
night. As soon as I started it the "overlay" screen (Home, Reset, etc.)
came up, as normal, but the hand pointer froze. And wouldn't move. And
the buttons did nothing. So I turned the Wii on and off again and
started Castlevania... and my save was gone. Gone!

I've got to do the first three stages over again now to get back to
where I was stuck. Grrr.

Oh. My. Lord.

How the mighty have fallen. Today I've spent most of my gaming on
Castlevania, and, uh, Castlevania.

The former, for the PS2 is a bit dull. It isn't Castlevania either. It's
whippy and stuff, and explorey, but where's the platforming? Why is there no
skill progression? Why is the camera horrendous? And why, oh why, is the
voice acting so awful?

I mean, the game isn't totally horrific. And it's amusing to see all the
Castlevania baddies all in 3D (although the Peeping Eyes look hilariously
wrong), but something isn't right. Like they've taken another game and
dressed it up as Castlevania.

AND WHAT THE HELL IS WITH THE "REAL TIME POWER-UP CHANGE"? EH? You're in the
middle of a heated fight, and whilst attacking/defending/avoiding things you
have to tilt the right stick to bring up the menu (which doesn't pause the
action), and then use the d-pad (so you can't move out of the way of things,
unless you have two left thumbs) to pick a potion or whatever. STUPID and
WRONG.

Gah.

Anyway. The other game was "The Castlevania Adventure" for the Game Boy.
Otherwise known as "The Game That Makes You Smash Things". It's SO
FRUSTRATING. If you've played it, and got past the Level 3 scrolly-spikey
section without causing actual physical damage to your hand-held,
congratulations. This is the game swearwords were invented for. Indeed, I've
invented a few new ones today.

The game plays like you're underwater. Everything is so slow. There's no
subweapons. There's too many pixel-perfect jumps. It really is Very Crap
Indeed.

But I completed it! Hurrah!

So... I stuck Symphony of the Night on my PSP last night. I kind of feel like
I'm missing something; it just looks like a platformer - a very pretty and
very difficult platformer, but "just" a platformer nonetheless.

What's the big deal, then?

Erm...........

Just play it and see if you need to ask again in a few days. If you do
then there's probably nothing we can say about it that will make any
sense :)

Well, at least let me see if I've got this right: it /is/ meant to be bloody
difficult, right? And there's no way to recharge your health except by saving
or using those potion thingies that you get once in a blue moon?

I think what bothered me was that there wasn't really any sort of lead-in
to the game. I read FAQs and they talk about special moves and spells and
collected 90-hojillion items, but there's nothing that describes /how/ you're
supposed to just play the damn game. And I feel like I must be doing it wrong
because at the moment I'm not sure I see what all the fuss is about :-/

You may or may not get access to shop where you can buy millions of
potions and armour and stuff (can't remember if there was a shop in
SotN). Basically - if it moves, kill it. If it doesn't explorify it :)

OH EM EFF GEE

Like an expectant kitten, PoR was waiting on my doormat when I arrived home.
I'm so excited!

In other news, once I've "done" Castlevania (like I've "done" 2D Zeldas, and
"done" Tony Hawk), I think I'd best move on to Final Fantasy. Partly because
I have the GBA FF I/II cart here unplayed, but mainly because in the last 24
hours I've bought FF III, IV, V and VI.

I've just ordered FFIII and PoR today. I have FFIV sitting waiting in
the house and will refrain from V and VI until I've cleared some of the
substantial backlog. And I still have DoS to complete. And Lost magic.
And Children of Mana. And...oh for heaven's sake.

Readers the same age as me will no doubt be giggling uncontrollably at
the thought of a Castlevania game starring Johnny Morris :)

Good lord. Portrait of Ruin has to be one of the best games I've played
on the DS. And with all the aces DS games available, that's no mean feat.

Without spoiling anything, I love how this game links in with
Castlevania Bloodlines, finally explains why the Morris family ended up
with the Belmont's whip, and foreshadows the events of 1999 that are
mentioned in Aria of Sorrow (which is set in 2035).

Clearly Konami need to make this 1999 game. For the DS, preferably.

Apparently Igarashi has absolutely no idea how to actually go about
doing the battle of 1999, despite the fact that he knows the story. I
suspect the problem is that, now that these events have been hyped up in
several games now - as well as it being Draculas last stand - he needs
to make it really spectacular.

The thing is, Castlevania has sod all of a budget. Even as of Portrait
of Ruin, some of the sprites they are using are going all the way back
to Rondo of Blood. Its unfortunate, but the only reason we really get
all the Castlevania games we do get is because they can recycle so much
from one game to the next. Its also the reason why the PS2 games aren't
half as good as they should be (though I still like them, personally).

Personally, I'll just be happy if we get another decent DS game.
