PLAY
Oblivion (360) - I finished the downloadable Knights of the Nine quest.
Quite short, rewards weren't great and it wasn't in the least bit
difficult, but it was good fun and it was lovely to go and visit
Cyrodiil again for a while. It's one gorgeous game when it wants to be,
is Oblivion. Pity about some of the voices being so damn quiet.
Guitar Hero (PS2) - Finished off Easy and started on Medium. The blue
button kills me. When it comes along I completely forget which button is
where and end up hitting red instead of green or yellow instead of red
for ten or twenty seconds until I recover. Not good. It really is
incredibly good fun, though.
Sonic Rivals (PSP) - A good modern Sonic game! Not a great one and it's
as much a ride as a game in many ways - but it's a ride that works. Even
the two boss fights I've seen so far have been okay. Sonic bosses I
don't detest? Something's gone unexpectedly right here.
Capcom Collection Remixed (PSP) - Got this half-price when I bought
Sonic. The inclusion of Strider blinded me to the fact that there are no
other games here I really care about. That said, of the three I've tried
so far, two have been hits. Strider is a classic piece of gaming and
still incredibly fun. 1941 was a great surprise, much faster and more
interesting than I was expecting. Pity about the controls when you flip
the screen, though. The miss was Street Fighter, which is incredibly
bad. I wasn't expecting much, but it's so much worse than I remember. I
just can't get my head around it at all.
Final Fantasy 3 (DS) - It looks nice. It's Final Fantasy. It's rock
hard. I think I'm going to places I shouldn't be going to, because I'm
dying a lot. I'll probably stick with it, if I get time.
Yoshi's Island DS (DS) - Half-way through the first world and having a
lot of fun with this one. I can see it getting tedious if taken too
quickly, but I think if I do a level or two here and there it'll remain
fun for a good long time. I'm impressed with Artoon so far.
WANT
A Wii, of course. I've cancelled my pre-order for Red Steel and gone for
Rayman instead, to add to Zelda and Monkey Ball. With Zelda being the
big, sit-down-for-hours game on launch, I'm after quick distractions and
controller lessons from my other games. I'm really hoping Gameplay get
my Wii to me on Friday.
BIN
PSP Firmware Updates (PSP) - Every single time I put a new game into my
PSP it tells me I have to install new firmware to play it. Which
requires plugging the PSP into its charger. I'm excited when I get a new
game! I just want to play it! Gah!
A Dualshock 2 (PS2) - Decided to play Shadow of the Colossus again.
Started up the PS2 and the cursor on the menu was going crazy. Turned
off, tried again, same thing. Tried an old original grey Dualshock, no
response at all. Loaded up Guitar Hero with the guitar plugged in and
everything was fine. Got grumpy. Spent ages looking for another
Dualshock 2. Not in the controller bin. Not in the cables bin. Not in
the misc bin. Not in the cupboard above the fridge where the old
consoles live. Not in the mainly-Nintendo cables drawer in the kitchen.
Finally I remembered to look in the wine cupboard by the sink in the
kitchen, where I, indeed, found one. Must remember that it's only the
mostly-wine cupboard. Anyway, that controller worked, so I threw away
the broken Dualshock 2 and settled down to play...
Shadow of the Colossus (PS2) - Oh dear. I don't know why, but I really
couldn't get into this. I loaded my saved game and went after the ninth
colossus, who kept killing me. In the end, though I knew what to do, I
gave up. I just couldn't avoid his attacks. Decided to start a new game,
but couldn't work out what to do to kill the first colossus, so gave up
on the game entirely. Just couldn't click with it. Odd, as last time I
played I loved it.
Sonic The Hedgehog Genesis (GBA) - By rights, the person who decided to
release this should face criminal charges. I'd read everything about
this online and it was still worse than I expected.

Mainly just for K.K. Slider though. Almost a year done though. Looking

Lumines II (PSP)
Maybe not as good as the first to begin with, but one you get used to the
differences, it begins to grow on you. I was even singing a 'Black Eyed
Peas' song casually yesterday.
Yoshi II (DS)
On the final stage of the first world and loving it. The two screens work
wonders for the hidden elements and the varied babies give the cuteness
factor that little bit more.
Elite Beat Agents (DS)
I am admittedly rubbish at this, even on the easiest setting, but as you
learn by trial and error, losers can still share the joy! Mad game by the
way.
Gears of War (360)
Great game, even if it is over rated. My problem is that now it is out and I
have almost completed it, what is there to look forwards to on the 360?
WANT

it could be fun. Plus the peer pressure of most people here makes me want
it.

Supposed to be the best in the series so far and I do like thinking

Idiots, there is little they could have done to lose more of my respect.
Even their recent PSP firmware was botched up (and wasted my electricity and

Also, I can't believe they haven't released extra levels for this. You'd
think that it would be a relatively low-cost job to produce another 20 or so

hundred points. Hell, even better, why not provide a level editor and allow

Quite apart from the fact that I'm not going to be able to spend Friday

my financial commitments over Christmas and New Year make such a purchase a

GoW (X360)
Finally killed that end-game bastard. After spending something like an
hour making repeated attempts he glitched and stuck in one place, I
took him out quite easily after that. I consider this fair when put in
context with the number of times that the control system has stopped me
from running, thereby killing me in about 2 seconds. Started playing it
on Hardcore, not enjoying it as much, the game seems to have magically
lost all of its flow. I think that reviewers should be made to play
this on Casual, aswell as all the other people that don't seem to get

Not for you, no. Except Banjo, since Rare are now back in your favour,

Guitar Hero II (PS2) - 24/40 songs done on Medium (can't be bothered
with Easy, it's just too boringly easy) nearly all on 5-stars and a few
perfects. Does gaming get any better than playing along to Sweet Child
O' Mine on a plastic guitar? Also did a few on Hard and completed my
first on Expert. Also played some co-op with SWMBO which was very funny,
how can anyone be so useless! I got further into the song with my 4-year
old daughter! Hope (and it's probably a false hope) that bass lines get
unlocked for single player.
Condemned (360) - Played through levels 4-7, a few scary moments but not
as bad as I feared (badum tish). Got all birds and metal pieces along
the way. Trying to finish this by Wednesday.
Viva Pinata (360) - Hmm, not sure what to make of this. It is good,
played a few hours got to level 10. Can see it getting boring quite
quickly though. Having to do the pac-man game every time you breed
something is already wearing thin. And it seems to make you wait as you
select two things until they do what you want, i.e. if you select moth
and direct to thistle, select worm direct to another worm, it forgets to
do the first thing. So you can't have multiple things going on at the
same time. Maybe it's me?
Rainbow Six: Vegas (360) - I like this, not so keen on some of the MP
modes though. Defusing the bomb mode is just plain broken. And the
points system is daft, how can it award more points for hiding and doing
nothing for 10 minutes than going out and killing the other team single
handed in 30s?

On the Virtual Console. Yes i've played through it before on N64 and DS
but still a great game and I don't mind playing through it all over
again without having to see it in fuzzovision and having to get the N64

Don't know about the removal of the blurred graphics. I thought that even
with a higher resolution it would be blurry if it's just emulation (which it
is).
I hope it is crystal clear though, as I also hope they do Blast Corps. in
clarity too.
I only played it in composhite before is what I mean.
You've already sold your soul to VP so you don't really need anything
else on the 360 for the next 12 months. :p
Same here. 14 inch TV in bedroom from start to finish. Those were the

Textures would still be blurry but any 3D models would be better defined
as a result, I'd have thought.

Yes, but just because I want them all doesn't mean I think they're all good.
In all likelihood, some will never even be opened.

It'll be like playing OoT from the Zelda collection on the Gamecube. (In
fact, it probably uses the same emulator - SM64 already ran perfectly
on it if you went through the trouble of getting it running.)

Fair enough, I was very much like this with DC games (I bought Spirit

Indeed, SM64 on UltraHLE (ahh, back in the day) at 1024x768 with lots

Viva Pinata (360) - Well, thanks people, I'm on the crack cocaine that

this'll still get played even when the Wii's in the house.

disconcerting to see what I'm going to look like when I'm 55 with a

One of my RL mates is playing it so I decided I'd reactivate my subs and

night in Silverpine Forest.
Dark Age Of Camelot (US): Labyrinth Of The Minotaur (PC)
Spent only an hour playing on my US account this weekend. Visited the
Labyrinth, killed a few minotaurs and goblins - that's about it.
Dark Age Of Camelot (EU): Darkness Rising (PC)
most of my game time was spent in this however a good few hours on
Saturday was mainly spent buying a cottage with my 3rd account and
moving stuff from the house on my main account into that cottage and the
one owned by my 2nd account. Once that was done I downgraded my house to
a cottage. Mainly done because in addition to buying houses/cottages you
have to pay weekly rent too and a cottage is 20g a week but a house is
200g a week.
Once that was sorted I spent most of rest of my DAOC time with some
mates from various guilds running around RvRland killing enemies and
defending a keep containing an enemy realm's relic to prevent it being
returned to its rightful owners.
In DAOC forums at Freddyshouse there was much wailing and gnashing of
teeth with regard to some people in my realm taking this relic in the
early hours of the morning.
This resulted in some people threatening to quit the game (or at least
quit the server) and some people being temporarily banned for taking
control of the keep which had the relic in it and purposely downgrading
its defences so that enemy realm could get it back easier.
All the drama and whining...though mostly whining

I've been playing quite a lot of this. Finished with two characters and
nearly done with the other two. The last level is great. I have many
cards but can't quite work outwhat they're for, though they do seem to
have unlocked some kind of scary all-in-one leather outfit for Sonic.
Trauma Center (Wii) - The DS version never quite clicked with me, but
the Wii version is excellent. Somehow it's actually easier to control
than with the stylus, and the Wii bits they've added work really well.
They've clealy put quite a bit of thought into the controls and it's
paid off.
Monkey Ball (Wii) - Up to world 8, and it's starting to get tricky. I
think I need to finish the previous worlds with no continues to unlock
the remaining worlds. That'll take a while.

It is really annoying, particularly since the updates are mostly
security fixes, and anybody with older firmware can bypass the need to
update anyway. The only people this affects are people playing original
games.
Wii Virtual Console pricing. The recent Genesis Collection of 28 games
for PS2 cost $20. 28 Genesis games on virtual console would cost $224.
You could buy a PS2 plus the Genesis collection and still have change
from that.
Kameo (360) - well, that was a bit underwhelming. Given that your last
transformation is not only several times stronger than everyone else and
has a move that renders it completely invincible, the final boss battle
ended up being an exercise in tedium more than anything else. Not an
awful game, but still not as good as it should have been.
Enchanted Arms (360) - the inclusion of an auto battle feature means I
don't actually have to play this. Which is probably a good thing, as
it's not exactly brilliant... about 15% complete, and I will soldier on
eventually.
Jeanne D'Arc (PSP) - it's a very solid strategy RPG, and that's all I can
really say thus far as I've only done three levels! It's nicely put
together but at this stage isn't very difficult and I haven't got a
varied enough party to see how the mechanics will really work.
Tales of Destiny (PS2) - this turned up today, so I've only put about
half an hour into it. I haven't got the hang of the battle system quite
yet (there's some weird "charge" system where every action takes up at
least a unit of charge, but it seems to regenerate randomly) but it's
very well presented and looks nice and deep. Unfortunately, you meet up
with the requisite Annoying Squeaky Girl character about 10 minutes in...

You tried running this on a widescreen TV? I wouldn't mind knowing if
playing these (fucking stupid) 4:3 only games on stretched widescreen
causes the pointer sensor to get all confused.

It won't make a difference. The Wii doesn't know how big the screen is
anyway. I go between 4:3 and 16:9 when playing Virtual Console games, and
it doesn't affect anything.
Trauma Center is 2D for a lot of the time, so I can well see why they
wouldn't want to reframe it for widescreen. It'd be nowhere near as easy as
it is with 3D stuff.
The empty DVD case inviting me to reserve my HMV Wii had a disclaimer at the
bottom saying that they couldn't guarantee a machine for release day. It's
precisely why I went to Game.

I've suddenly got back into this as I've realised that the Platinum

Gears of War (360)
Part way through Act 4, switched to Hardcore during Act 2 so I might go

muppets disconnecting just before a checkpoint. What a shame that

You won't need to schedule much time for that as it only takes about 20

R/C Stunt Copter (PS1) - finished on Rookie (I can't really handle it
without the auto-level etc.). It's not bad once you get the general
idea, but IMHO it should have had simplified controls and more
interesting goals. As it is the goals are fairly basic and the
difficulty is purely down to fighting the controls, which is a pretty
odd way to do things. Also, the free-flight option (which I think you
don't even have to unlock) is a nice idea but mostly useless in
practice, because all the levels are tiny. I did like the one where
you pilot a dragonfly though. :-)
Dave Mirra Freestyle BMX 2 (GC) - this is similar to the original,
just with bigger levels, a better framerate, and much higher
difficulty (though it does disguise this by letting you unlock new
levels long before finishing the existing ones). It's still painfully
slow, still very glitchy, still has arguably the most awkward controls
of any of the TH-ish games, and still has a ridiculous number of
competitions, I think it's ten this time (and they're too hard right
from the start, I couldn't even get a bronze on the first). No danger
of finishing this one.
SSX Tricky (PS2) - this is... playable, but surprisingly poor really.
In some ways it's not so different from SSX3 (the first one I tried)
but it just feels very stilted, awkward, and slow in comparison.
Retro Force demo (PS1) - I can't say I'll be buying the game, but it
seemed reasonable enough for a basic Xevious 3D/G-style shooter.

A bunch of games to arrive, specifically Virtua Fighter 4 (PS2), Need

Lots of very glitchy behaviour in Dave Mirra 2. The number of times I
inexplicably smacked into a rail rather than grinding it (while
holding the grind button) was just ridiculous - one easy grind-related
goal in the Commercial district I had to do about five times before it
would finally accept it.
Several PS1 demos - Tank Racer wasn't quite as crap as it sounded, but
still very bland and overly hard. Medievil 2 was crap, and I didn't
think much of the non-optional rumble for every single footstep. (!)
Urban Chaos, Bloodlines, and Rugrats were all rubbish. As for the
Yaroze "Adventure Game", that didn't seem to work at all. Presumably
that's PS2-related, I'll have to dig out my actual PS1 somewhen and
try it on that.
Warpath: Jurassic Park (PS1) - unfortunately I got this and ODT in the
same bundle as Everybody's Golf 2 (which I've not tried yet) and R/C.
It's a generic Primal Rage clone in 3D, basically; I think the best
thing you can say about this is that the graphics don't suck too much
for a PS1 game.
ODT (PS1) - so tedious-looking that I didn't bother with more than the
attract mode.
Sega Extreme Sports (DC) - below-average snowboarding, awkward
hang-gliding, and annoying ATV (Worst. Engine Noise. Ever.) mashed
together into something so awful it's hard to believe they put "Sega"
on it. Speaking of which:
