Despite the current fashion for hating bosses in ugv* I am actually a
huge fan of them. Without the bosses COTM would have been less than half
the game it was. They present a big difficulty spike, demand a different
type of gameplay, and often have two phases with no energy bars. But
they're brilliant fun to fight and very satisfying to beat, and I
can't see how anyone could argue that.

I can't really remember CotM very well, but the latest DS version,
Portrait of Ruin, has been killed for me by the bosses. They're much
harder than the rest of the game and just kill the flow of the game
stone dead. I've pretty much given up on it now. I really can't be
bothered. And I normally love the Castlevania games. I just can't be
arsed with going back and scraping together money for potions and tonics
just to give myself a chance against the next boss. It's all just
incredible amounts of no fun.
I do remember that I never did finish CotM, just because the final boss
was too annoying. The game went into my "life's too short" pile. See
also: Pandemonium, Vagrant Story, The Minish Cap, etc.

Aha. So that's what that pile is called. The name itself makes me feel so
much better. Having said that, I've been much better recently - I'm much
more discerning now and can only really remember MGS3 and FF4 being left
incomplete.
I guess I prefer not to try a game at all than be potentially disappointed
with it!

I haven't played it in a fortnight, but have been playing the bloody difficult
SCIV this week. I'm up to Dracula - finally! The last couple of levels were
a bit of a boss-a-thon, although (luckily) not a SuckySuck(TM) bit as they're
not repeated bosses.
I can't get rid of more than half of Dracula's energy though. GRRRR!

I don't mind bosses as long as they don't take too long to kill (as you have
to avoid attacks for ages before you get one hit in, then repeat) and you
don't have to trek for miles before you get to them.
My trouble with Dracula is that I'm taking too many risks by trying to hit him
every time he appears, even if I'd be better off holding fire and dealing with
his missiles.

My computer runs at 3.5MHz and I'm proud of that
With Castlevania bosses I just tend to plough in and kill them before
they kill me. That was how I beat Dracula in HoD, and is working
through the bosses in AoS so far (Balrog being the last).
