I bought this fantastic invention but can't decide whether to install the
dimmer or not. Some say you leave the light on all the time so it's not
needed whearas some say they're glad they installed it because colours can
look washed out.

I can always add it afterwards (but who's going to get round to that after
the joy of light is discovered) but wanted some opinions on it.

Cheers,

Its up to you really, depends how adventurous you want to be with the
fitting of the AB. I personally think you don't need it but others (DB2K
;o) disagree saying that in good light, with it always on, makes the
colours look washed out - I've personally never noticed this at all. So
for me, I'd rather not got to the lengths of hacking an opening in my case
so I can fit the switch - plus there is always the risk you may cut out a
bit too much of the GBA plastic and you'll end up with a dimmer switch that
looks shite. If you feel confident about it then by all means go for it I
guess. I'm sure if fitted nicely it looks fine - in fact I know it does
because I've seen pictures.

What are you on about? The guy has bought the kit version so he HAS a
choice anyway, were not talking about the Pocket Gamer service anymore.
He's asking is it worth puting the dimmer in.

BTW, have I done something to offend you? We used to get on alright and
your posts were great - now we seem to have come to blows and I don't know
why!

I jave just got my Afterburner-enhanced GBA back from PortableGamer and I
was worried about this whole washed-out issue, especially since
PortableGamer do not fit it as standard any more. However, having played
with my GBA in most lighting conditions since getting it back I honestly
have not mentioned any washed-out colours. I would suggest that you try it
without the dimmer and then fit it at a later date if you think that you
really need it.

ahh course not Chris..
its just friendly banter brought on from years and years of
posting..you're like a brother to me..!

(that make ya feel better?)

If I was him..i'd fit it..it might be a bit more hassle but you can then
at peast have the option to leave it on, where as if you dont fit
it..thats that...

Also I think the dimmer gives the GBA more "show off" potential..
I showed my GBA to the guy in the Games shop..he wasnt impresswed, then I
turned the light up for him..he nearly fell over..

What I'm torn between is I like the challenge of fitting the dimmer and
it is excellent show off potential but I don't want it to become useless
clutter afterwards if I don't use it. It'd be nicer if it was the type
that clicked off but I can get over that. The sensible option is to not
bother at first and wait to see if I need it but I know I'll be too lazy
to bother opening the case up a second time :)

Actually, good idea, I might wait until I know how easy the plastic is
to cut, that sounds like a good plan!

Thanks for the comments guys,

Eh? If you don't fit it you have the option to do so at a later date. I
mean if he decides not too, trys it in direct light and finds out the
colours are washed out then he could fit it - if he, like me, doesn't
notice the washed out colours effect that you mention then alls good - you
don't need it.

I can see the logic in putting it in for 'show off potential' - its a nice
touch, as long as you can fit it so it looks good :o)

At the end of the day the question you need to ask is, will it be worth the
extra hassle to put it in just for showing it off?

I think that's what I might do at first, I think I used to turn the
brightness on the Lynx down in direct light but that's what the anti
reflective film's for on the AB so it might not be a good comparason.
You're right tho I think it's a better idea to see what it's like, then
if I want to put the dimmer in I'll have to make sure I'm not too lazy
to bother :)

I quite like the idea of doing it, when I'm actually doing it I might
change my mind though :) It does also depend on having it look good
afterwards so I think I'll see how easy the plastic is to cut first too.

hmm but after not fitting it,...what are the chances of opening it up
again and more soldering etc...?
slim to none i reckon..

LOL :o)
I watch too much X-Files :o)

Depends how adventurous you are. Surely you see the logic in not hacking
away at your GBA and installing the dimmer if you like it with the light on
always and you'd never use the dimmer anyway?

> mine doesnt look too bad..the cuts on the outside are a little bad but i

Now you see, I wouldn't be happy with that. I know that if I tried to do
it, no matter how good it seemed, I know I'd look at it and think 'that
looks so un-professional'.

Even though Chris's post made some sense, I don't really think
uk.games.video.gameboy will tolerate that. So here comes the reply:

kinda..but not really..

They've been residing in Hong Kong - only just available in the UK from
Toys R Us and Gadget Shop - but only two types and frequencies (due to UK
RF laws). Importing is a much better idea as you have a bigger selection
to chose from. http://www.toyeast.com - reccommended.

I remember now the Char G that was out years ago that was similar but bigger
and not based on real cars or upgradable or anything. I really wanted one of
those, these are millions of times better. I deserve a hobby that isn't
sitting in front of a screen... ;)
