Ok ok I know everyone gets fed up with these type of questions they have probably been answered a thousand time but here goes. I have a:
166mmx computer, 32mb ram, 3dfx graphics card etc.
ok its not a monster pc but surely it should run ok over the internet? lag, lag, lag poor ping u know how it is the modem is a usrobotics x2 I connect at 48,000bps so what I want to know is WHY? Are there any settings for the modem or a way I can get quake 2 to use more memory please if you have the time it would be appreciated. Thanks.
(Or is it just virgin isp?) Please send replies to: trevo...@virgin.net
The problem that you are having, as likely as not, has to do with your modem. The x2 protocol and Quake do NOT get along. There have been several upgrades from USR, mostly for the server, that have tried to address this and a couple of other problems, but as yet, there is no solid fix.
I know when I connect, I am generally Web stable at 49.3. And even that was not until after I upgraded my modem code 2 weeks ago. But when playing Quake, I'll get decent (200-350) pings, but lousy throughput, and packet loss like a punctured balloon. I have had my ISP techs watch me while online, and I'll get actual ping rates as high as 1700. My ISP has installed all of the USR upgrades, and are blowing huge loads of cash, trying to increase their bandwidth and get this problem solved, but so far, I am spotty at best when Quaking at x2 speeds.
I have tried this recently, and it seems to be working. I installed my modem again, this time calling it #2, and set up a second DUN. I disabled the x2 protocol on this DUN so that it only connects at 33.6. I has only been a week since I did that, and so far, as long as my packet loss stays low, I ping at about 250-300. There is a web page http://www.navpoint.com/~zephed/qx2.html that has some tips for setting up an x2, but I will warn you. He tells you to upgrade your DUN 1.2 from the Microsoft site, and I have seen on several messages here and elsewhere, that DUN 1.2 causes its own problems for quake. I would wait on that for now.

Try running quake in non GLmode (Winquake) and see if you get the same problem. If not, it looks like you are experiencing the dreaded GLQuake P.O.D. (ping of death). See 3dfx.games.quake newsgroup for solutions to this problem. Reducing Quake frame rate (by switching on R_shadows, gl_flashblend and running at 640x480) seems to help.

Its probably a combination of virgin and the closeness of the servers you're playing on. There is a utility called MTUSpeed which is on the net somewhere that is supposed to improve TCP/IP through windows 95, its free and appears to work OK on mine.
I've got a less beefy PC than you and I get pings of about 200ish whilst playing on BTs wireplay service. I recommend it, its quite good and has CTF and TeamFortress servers too.

Sorry for going slightly off-topic, but I'm new to Quake internet gaming. I get ping times of 190-290 on roughly 10% of the servers that I spy (using QuakeFinder for PowerMac with a 3dfx eqipped 604e). This is with a 28.8 on Prestel Online or my Uni dialin service. Is this good?
first of all you can't controll the lag......it is something that is caused by internet traffic....and you can only controll how much memory your game uses by limiting the omount of programs you have running...in this case it still doesnt matter if you run a minimum amount of programs, just enough to keep windows running the game and the internet, you still have the internet traffic, which has everything to do with your connection. For example lets say you connect at (like you said 48000bps) thats great but this is not allways true...the modem you use will say it is connecting then your computer will tell you what you have connected at and sometimes say you are still connected at some ungodly amount of bps....you will never know for sure the exact bps that you are currently running.....your lag is due to internet traffic and your game will be much less irratating if you just play single player, off of the internet...I learned this with Diablo.....I was driven nuts by PKers and LAG LAG LAG....You have a fine system, as long as it doesnt crash every time you play then your problem is uncontrollable by you....lag/ by the way what game r u playing? my email is suk...@aol.com

I've gotten as low as 140 before on a hometown server with my 33.6 modem. God that was fun... some dude came in on a dual 128K isdn connect and I kicked his ass 30 - 16 :). Gotta love those hometown Q2 servers :).

For a 28.8, I'd say 190 is an excellent ping. It won't go much farther down than that on your modem. A ping of 290 is not the best, but it will do. If you get a ping near 350, you should consider connecting to another server.

Hehe, I've got about 140 on a hometown server too. Actually, it was not a *hometown* server, but a server located in my home country. Btw: a 128k bundled isdn surfer usually have a ping as low as 30-40 or something, and since you kicked his ass, I've gotta say either you're very good, or he's a newbie or something. Nice work, though, it's always great to hear that LPB's get their asses kicked too now and then. :-))) -- - Remove NOSPAM_ from my e-mail address when replying! - Kashif Akhtar - 1997 <kas...@mindless.com>
I have two computers, and connect via null-modem. In quake 1 I select the serial/direct connection, yet when both pc's start the game they totally ignore each other!
Could someone either post a easy to understand guide or at least post a URL to one, thanks!

One computer must be server (choose New Game mode - F5) and the other must be client (choose Join a Game mode - F5). Server must be the first to be setting up. Both computers must be on the same connection speed and choose the right com port for each one.
Avoid doing all that in Win95, do it in DOS (exit in DOS mode for Win95) for both computers.

Sometimes net play can be precarious, theres alot of variables, busy network or ISP... since X2 doesnt seem to be the standard like the Flex then its your modem,. I have played people with a 28.8 modem, and they Kick Butt! In quake 2 there are 2 many problems and fixes needing to be done, give it awhile and it may work out, but for right now your just outa luck, if you havent played quake on the net, then thats your problem! Stick to quake world for awhile and all will come to Pass!

Actually, I have Q1 & Q2 and Q2 makes Q1 look like a slideshow. If you got the machine for Q2. Run your own server and give people your IP. Just be semi careful who you give it to.
When you do connect to a Q2 server iy's well worth the wait. The balance of the weapons just makes it an excellent DM experience. Q1 just can't touch it. It'd be even better when we do get the 'post-Christmas' Q2. :-)
