FAQ list. It is partly based on some material in a previous FAQ
list maintained by Paul Mazumdar for several years, but concentrating
on more specific lists. Thanks to Paul for all his work in the past.
(There ought to be a better acknowledgements list than this; I've
concentrated more on getting this together than recording contributions.
At this time I hope it suffices to say this is not an individual effort,
and thanks to all those who have contributed either to Paul or me.)
As is usual with a document of this sort, contributions, both
where there are clearly incomplete entries and of new entries,
are not just welcome but positively solicited. In particular
there must be a great many more web sites (not just shops) and
clubs worth mentioning. The publishers list also needs expansion
- and as far as I'm concerned even a one man self-publishing
concern is worth a listing. Note however that in order to keep the
document focused I plan only to include only really significant
non-UK items.
This is intended to be a neutral document, listing various shops
and so on alphabetically without regard to size or other features.
Whilst I have dealt with quite a few of the organisations listed,
I certainly haven't dealt with all of them. Appearance in this
list is not intended to give any sort of recommendation except for
the major non-UK entries.
I have cross-posted this to uk.games.board and rec.games.board,
as it is in the latter that such questions as "Where are the
games shops in London?" actually are frequently asked.
It's been rather too long since I last posted this (May 2005) but
I plead Real Life, some of which I'd rather not have happened. But
I'm back, and the intent is for monthly postings in 2006.
Because it's been a while, I suspect I may have missed some things
that ought to be in here. So if you know of anything that isn't
here, please let me know. (If it's not here, I don't know about it,
even if I've been told before.) I also haven't checked all the links
here are still valid, a task for another day.
Someone did point out to me this is a Frequently Asked Questions
list without actually containing any questions ...
A note on phone (and fax) numbers. These are given below in their
internal UK format. To use internationally drop the initial 0
and dial your international code prefix (00 from Western Europe)
and the UK country code 44.
1. Games Shops
This is a board games FAQ, but obviously there's an overlap into
CCGs, RPGs and figure wargames. This list is intended to include
only shops with a significant board games line, but since I haven't
visited all of them, I've had to make some guesses about inclusion.
I've been inclusive rather than exclusive, but I've still excluded
shops which appear on some other people's lists but which seem to
be exclusively non-board games (or non-games). Games Workshop also
doesn't make the cut, but if you want to find them, try
http://www.gamesworkshop.com. The largest retailer who does pass
muster is Toys'R'Us, but rather than my attempting to list their
stores (64 at latest count apparently, distributed well around
the country) go to http://www.toysrus.co.uk.
A note about counties and countries. I decided to go over the
top, so all entries have a county and country (England, Scotland,
Wales or Northern Ireland). I hope most UK readers won't need most
of these, but I'm assuming some non-UK readers - and some towns
may be unfamiliar to some (including me).
