Ended up buying a large back of very tasty (and ripe) baby plum tomatoes
for a quid, a mini ciabatta, some home-made butter and mushroom pate from
the "Pate Moi" stall.
As well as a bacon sandwich to take along the way to work...

Something I've always wanted to do! Sounds like you would recommend it
then?
It is lovely, although I wouldn't go every weekend. Give it a try!
It's time we went again. Haven't been for around 2 months.
Now would be a good time to go, as within a few months, part of the
market will be cordoned off for a couple of years while work proceeds
on the new "Thameslink 2000" railway line which will cross part of the
site. I'm not sure of the exact timings.
After the work is completed, Borough Market will be restored mostly to
its current state. But in the interim, the unique atmosphere will
inevitably change as heavy construction work takes place above.
In the original scheme for "Thameslink 2000", a substantial part of
the market would have been closed permanently. A strong campaign
ensured that the plans were changed to minimise the effect on the
market in the long term.
The latest information I have is that the work at Borough Market is
due to start in January 2009.

I've heard that the (real ale) pub opposite is OK as well.

It's a nice time - so long as you get there before, say, 11am before it
gets swamped with tourists (and London-dwellers). You get a pleasant murmur
from people wandering around.
I've not been for 3 months to properly nose around - probably for the best,
given the amount I typically spend...
Oh - and stop for a pint in the Market Porter!
Richard
Replied without seeing this - yes the Market Porter has plenty of ales on
tap. If you end up standing outside, just try and give in to the sausages-
on-a-spit from the shop next door!

When I was having a drink with friends outside the Market Porter in
April I was very tempted to have some sausages and they even gave us a
free portion, but we were eating later at Black & Blue and I didn't want
to spoil my appetite so I abstained.
They place big bunches of rosemary underneath the sausages as they roast
on the spits, which provides a nice flavour as it smokes. I wasn't
paying that much attention, but I got the impression that these got
rather scorched, soaked up lots of fat, and then got dumped on the
pavement afterward - possibly to cool down before they could be binned.

Ditto here - maybe it was the same afternoon ! Very tasty although I've had
a couple of gristly moments from their sausages.

They certainly do a roaring trade, be it from Market-goers or Market Porter
drinkers...
