just been up to the butchers and bought some broccoli, a thought
struck me, I'm pretty sure I didn't have broccoli in me yoof, only
cauliflower. Was that because I grew up in cardboard in middle t'road
or was that general? I'm thinking 50's 60s. I remember seeing a
bananana.

We never had broccoli either in those days. I can't remember when I
first had broccoli - may have been in the 70's

Every Spring there was a very short season for what Mum called sprouting
broccoli. The stalks were relatively thin, not like the plump heads we now
get. I remember it as a treat and a harbinger of Summer.

In the 70s I grew sprouting broccoli but hadn't really connected it with the
stuff we get now because the flavour it so different. As you say that was
thin, but it was totally delicious steamed straight off the plant! I wonder
if you can still get the plants.

Fresh vegetables of the '50s were much more seasonal when I lived in
rural Michigan and I remember oranges as a Christmas treat. I would
have probably seen a lot more variety if I'd lived in a big city, like
Chicago, when I was a kid - but I was out in the country. I'd never
eaten a fresh mushroom (didn't even see them at the grocery store)
until I moved to California in the mid '60s. Grocery stores here had
a wide variety of fresh fruits and vegetables all year long!

Early Spring is the season for broccolini
http://www.valleycenterorganicgardens.com/sites/valleycenterorganicgardens.com/files/broccolini.jpg
or broccoli rabe (rappini/broccoletti)
http://blog.fatfreevegan.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/broccoli-rabe.jpg

I remember going out into the cow pasture to hunt for asparagus. That
was a lot of fun. Asparagus is still the harbinger of Spring for me.
I like to serve what used to be known as "Spring" lamb and asparagus
on Easter Sunday. Unfortunately, I haven't served leg of lamb
(boneless) in the last couple of years because the price is
astronomical these days.

I Googled an image of sprouting broccoli and thought... That's (what
we call) Chinese broccoli! The Chinese are very frugal, so this
explanation of what sprouting broccoli is made sense to me.
" Sprouting broccoli is the side shoots of the broccoli plant ,which
grow after the main head has been taken off."

This site makes me think it's a specific type of broccoli, not a
bonus... so I'm totally confused
http://tallcloverfarm.com/271/sprouting-broccoli-its-a-keeper
Sprouting broccoli simply isn't a well known/marketed term used here.

Yes, we got our first proper calabrese heads last year, previous years
have been a bit feeble. And purple sprouting broccoli was one of the
first crops we had success with (it being an overwinter crop, normally,
so it doesn't have to compete for attention with all the other things
we are trying to keep alive and cropping).
I've never been /entirely/ sure how to eat purple sprouting - you seem
to cook about 6" of stalk, but it tends to get a bit woody on the main
stem quite soon, unlike asparagus.

I used to grow that in the 70s:)

Fortunately, mine grew quite near my back door and I used to pick it and
straight into the steamer. I can't remember the stalks being particularly
tough but then it has been a very long time. I didn't grow a lot so perhaps
it didn't stay on the plant long enough to get tough. When I get the chance
I will certainly grow it again. Good luck with yours:)

I didn't either. Never saw it around but probably wouldn't have been fed
it if it had been - foreign stuff - must be nasty - like curry - like
anything unfamiliar.

After all, spaghetti was only ok out of a tin.

Broccoli from the butcher? Is that not unusual?
During the war I used to dream of bananas. When they came back into the
shops they were just for kids with green ration books and mine was Blue
(5 to 16 year olds).
I had pneumonia and as I recovered the doctor said to my mother give him
whatever he wants to eat.
There was only one answer to that and she had to plead with the
greengrocer to get a couple for me. I had one mashed up in the Top of
the Milk and immediately felt better.

not round here, butchers do not sell chickens as they cannot compete
with smarket but they do fresh veg that's "just round the corner", our
one also does eggs, cheese. Possibly banananananas?
At least the survivors do. He also delivers to a lot of older people
whom he keeps an eye on.
He can of course tell you where his meat comes from and that it didn't

My mum always buys her eggs from the butcher. They don't sell fruit+
veg, but there is a fruit+veg shop next door. Which also sells eggs.

Potassium helped the weird cramps I was having a few weeks ago, but
they didn't stop. Then I realized it was probably the diuretic I was
taking, so I cut it in half... but didn't feel completely better until
I just plain stopped. I think I'll only take it on an as needed basis
from now on. It was supposed to be a daily dose, but that's not
working for me anymore.

I've started dropping the gin from my g+t with grapefruit. Not for
any health reason, just cos I found it a nice refreshing drink.

They have been losing money. There isn't the quality in the clothing any
more and it has been a big mistake.

Getting back to broccoli... this recipe looks interesting enough to
try at least once - Spicy Broccoli with Garlic (disregard the pepper)

It looks nice but I don't think you can beat it lightly steamed with
butter:)

I've eaten broccoli that way all my adult life. Don't you want an
occasional change? I certainly do! Roasting works for me; but this
looks interesting enough to try at least once.

Hey, I said "disregard the pepper" initially. Look at the recipe
before you decide you don't like it, "Julie"! :)

I was wearing linen trousers today, and had my first martini 'on the
balcony' of the year! :)

We got back on the night of April 11 and switched on the heat for a day,
but it's been off since then, and don't imagine switching on until
October...

I made this recipe yesterday. I followed it exactly except for using one
pound of broccoli rather than the 1.5 pounds. It's so very good. I will
make this one again for sure.

And for Ophelia, the small amount of red pepper flakes did not make this
dish hot at all.

It's a "keeper!"
