My son would like to pursue a doctorate in the UK system. An
explanation of the process and length of study of PhD's, D.Litt, etc.
would be most helpful. He intends to remain in Europe teaching. How
does UK system differ from the US? Thank you.

If he is at a university already he should ask an academic there who the
leading scholars in the field he's interested in are. One hopes that
there are a few at least in the UK. He should then look at that
person's institution's web site for details about post graduate study
and then he should contact that person directly.
Whatever happens, he shouldn't _intend_ to remain in Europe teaching,
there are such things as visas, work permits, employers' wishes, to be
considered. You probably meant that he hopes, etc.
