NIC EIC needed to work in the kitchen?
I have hired someone to completely redo the kitchen in my flat. He started a week ago, and so far he has only done preparation work - the kitchen has been completely gutted. He describes himself on his quote as "Electrical Contractor NIC EIC". The only problem is that, ahem, he isn't on the NIC EIC... more »

Hob installation - ventilation
Hi, I've just fitted a built in hob in my new kitchen. I rang up the plumber today to arrange for him to connect to the gas up, and double checked with him the requirements for ventilation. Apparently, as the room is between 5m2 and 10 m2, I need a 50 cm2 ventilator to the outside world, as I have an outside opening window,... more »

why use wood-primer?
At the risk of being labelled a bodger : Some time ago I needed to paint some newly fitted woodwork (probably skirting or architrave). I didn't have enough wood-primer, but knew I shouldn't go straight to gloss so in a hurry grabbed a pot of emulsion and used some of that as a base-coat. It seemed to work fine to me and I've used it again a couple of times... more »

Plastering ceiling tips ?
I have replaced the plasterboard ceiling in my downstairs cloakroom, which is 1.25m x 1.6m. I want to skim the ceiling with a thin layer of thistle board finish or similar. I don't think a pro plasterer would be interested in a job this small. In the past I have done some plastering for repairs etc so I thought I would... more »

Boiler vibration/oscillation (not the fan or pump)
Our boiler (Baxi Megaflo System 32 HE) has, since new, been prone to vibration at certain levels of demand. The oscillation is at quite a high frequency, I would estimate 15-20 Hz, and doesn't have a mechanical source (like the fan or pump) but seems to be a rapid modulation of the burner. When it's happening, the flue gases have a... more »
