Hi every body,

I am posting this here because there are plenty of thoughtful blokes
of a certain age and I hope not to attract too much flak. There is a
wonderful irony of asking this in a DIY forum, but dear readers do not
try this at home.

Who has had the snip, as in vasectomy? (if that is how it is spelt).
How was it?
Any side effects?
Any loss of sensation or desire?
Any discomfort when having sex afterwards?
Any thing else of interest to a potential user?

All contributions welcome and I hope you all take it with good humour
and in the spirit that I am asking the question.

Best wishes to all

Henry

My wife lost interest in sex. It took the risk away of her becoming
pregnant because she was scared of giving birth. So then there was not any
point in having sex. And it was her idea in the first place as she had high
blood pressure and had to come of the pill.

So what really happened? You had an accident with a Stanley knife?

I had it. It didn't hurt, but was almost certainly the most uncomfortable
experience of my life. The injecting of the local has to be experience to be
believed, such intense discomfort without being particularly painful. The
biggest issue was embarassment, mainly when providing "samples" after the op
to check my fertility - or lack thereof. You have to get the sample to the
path lab in less than 4 hours, so when you turn up, it's obvious what you've
been up to recently. The only discomfort - if you can call it that - was on
the drive home from the hospital. Every time my wife used the brakes, I
looked in the footwell to see if certain bodily "items" had dropped down
there. And as for loss of desire - sod that. That night I wanted to check it
all worked, but the missus wouldn't come near me for fear of hurting me.
Since then - no complaints.

Oh boy! Now THERE is a topic for a 'do it yourself' group! ;-)
Next we'll have someone claiming they had it done "without
anaesthetic"! e.g. "Just used a blunt chisel OM". :-)
BTW; To Frustrated; s suggestion: Reintroduce the 'risk' factor;
'Tell her it's reversible'!
I believe I've read somewhere it is, but why anyone would bother?
Although I s'pose Harley Street might have something to say,
either way? :-(

Prepare yourself for the standard joke as the nurse gives you the injection :-

'Don't worry, all you will feel is a little prick'

Practice NOT laughing at this line- you do NOT want to move during this
process.

When in the same position as the OP some years ago, I seached on the web for
information (not having the balls to ask in the DIY group!! HAha)

I located the following http://www.axalotl.demon.co.uk/tasteless/vasectomy.html
which as well as being side splittingly funny actually did help re-assure me
what was likely to happen. The author of the piece I later found appears in
this NG regularly and as a result I feel as if I know him just that little bit
better even though we have never met.

One last thought - Do take note of the bit about shaving the day before - the
best single bit of advice you should follow.

Good Luck

Bob

Shaving wasn't required or necessary in 1969 - and Spouse is a very hairy
man. It was a much easier process than in Huge's account and done in a
nursing home specialising in plastic surgery.

Sort of related, did anyone see the clip they showed on comic relief where
the African guy demonstrated the method they used for castrating cattle
using a flat stone an L shaped club ended stick. He demonstrated with a
smile on his face as he bashed the stone with the stick, leaving to your
imagination what goes in between. They've modernised now and used nice shiny
pincers. Mind you I don't suppose the stone and stick method was too painful
as long as you kept your thumb out of the way.

When my brother-in-law had it done they went all black and enlarged and were
painful for about a week.

Like frustrated Dave my wife was not having sex for fear of getting
pregnant.

I had the Vasectomy under duress.

Some discomfort at the time but no side effects.

Wife was still not interested in sex so I got a girlfriend - no problem with
getting it up.

Wife found out about girlfriend. Lost House, kids and tool kit.

Now got better tool kit and still with girlfriend.

Embarassment was definitely the main factor. I was provided with
two labelled screw-top jars and envelopes in which to put them.

There was the option of delivering them to the path lab or taking them
to the GP surgery which has a courier going there twice a day.

On the second occasion I was busy and going in the opposite direction
to the lab so I took said jar in envelope along to the surgery and
handed it to the practice nurse explaining that it was all labelled
and could she send it off to the lab. Before I could say anything,
she had ripped the envelope off and binned it and proceeded to march
across the full waiting room to the store with the jar in full
view...........

You should have complained (to her, and possibly to the practice

For even more info., check out http://www.vasectomy-information.com

This is a great site with stories by men who have been through it,
links to medical sites on different procedures, pre-op prep., post-op.
care, possible complications and treatments. There are even videos and
slide shows of vasectomies in progress (not for the faint hearted!).

My doc. wanted the sample within an hour. I chose not to give at his
office, but "collected" at home, then rushed the stuff into the clinic
on the way to work. Handed it to the nurse, who disappeared into the
back. Doc. came out minutes later to give me the good news. All very
simple and civilized. (This happened twice, as they want two clear
samples before they give the "go" order.) The embarrassing part came
much earlierwhen I showed up 1 week after the vasectomy for the doctor
ordered check-up on healing etc. I was running late and had raced up
the stairs. Slightly out of breath, I told the receptionist I had an
appointment with my doc. (the clinic's vas. specialist), but needed to
use the bathroom first (had been too busy at work to pee). And she
asked, confidentially and in a sweet voice, "Is this for a sample?" I
had to laugh, imagining how I must have looked, this redfaced guy just
panting to jerk off into a cup. (BTW, the site below also has some
great vasectomy jokes.)

Of course - but the odds, according to the replies in this thread, make it
unlikely.

The benefits far outweigh the risks. And nothing is without risk, life
itself is not 100% safe. In fact it's 100% doomed.
