I've had two B&Q own-brand 9W lamps fail after very short lives - the
second one after no more than 700 hours and less than 150 turn-ons.
Milk-bottle-size Philips lamps seem to have a reasonable life, so are
the more compact ones generally worse, or are B&Q lamps crap, or have I
just been unlucky?

I'm planning a little chat with the B&Q manager, but I wondered if the
problem is widespread.

And have you noticed that 40W GLS lamps are being marginalised? B&Q
only sell them singly or in packs of 3 for 69p, whereas 60W and 100W
lamps are in tens, at 1.99, and several shops no longer stock them.

No, just the opposite (assuming you mean electronic)

Yes, the price should have told you that :-)

:-)

I havn't bought any GLS lamps for about 10 years. I have a
cupboard full of those I removed at that time, and on the very
rare occasion I need one, it's one of those which gets used.

The price should have warned you about the quality.

I've also hads a B+Q lamp fail; I took it back and got 50% off the cost
of a new Philips lamp. The assistants were aware of the problem.

If it looks too good to be true, it probably is.

Logically, low price means low quality. High price means quality unknown.

As an add-on to this... does anyone make low energy lamps which give
more than 100W ? I have several rooms which need 150W lamps, but have
never seen these in Low Energy versions.

Yes, both Philips PLET and Osram Dulux EL electronic ballast lamps are
available in a 23W version, output 1500 lumens, equivalent to 120W GLS.
Above that there is the Osram Circolux, which is like a mini version of
those old circular fluorescents (but with electronic ballast for direct
insertion in a lamp-holder). These come in 18, 24 and 32W sizes, 1000,
1450 and 2000 lumens, equiv to 75, 100+ and 150W according to the RS
catalogue. The 24 and 32W sizes have an overall diameter of 216mm, so you
will need to make sure that they will fit your lampshade or fitting.

You can also get the Thorn (GE) 2D lamp in 28 and 38W versions (2050 and
2850 lumens). These are a tube only and need separate control gear and a
special lamp-holder.

All above should be available at any decent electrical wholesaler, if not
your average DIY shed.
