BTW, the 150mph quoted as the E type top speed was only ever achieved with
the original road test car which was fitted with a D type engine.
Production versions were more like 135 mph. It wasn't until the V12
arrived that a production E-Type could make 150 mph.

There's been a lot of debate over the years about the exact provenance of
that engine, but it was certainly blueprinted and very carefully assembled.
But the real trick, which nobody spotted at the time, was that the car was
fitted with Dunlop Green Spot racing tyres which deform at speed thereby
increasing the rolling radius - hence the famous 150mph which was only
slightly more than the magazines were able to achieve on more ordinary road
tyres.
I agree that the programme was crap - I thought it must have been made about
1980 in view of the apparent availability of cheap E-Types and the prices
quoted for the various "refurbishments" and I was astonished to find it was
actually current.
