Painting plastic

I have a pretty old tattly looking plastic patio table and chairs. I
thought I might tart it up a bit with some paint. What kind of paint ought
I to use?

If it looks like mine, then the tip is the best place for it!

I believe there are specialist paints for this (tried B&Q and the like?) but
I'm not sure how well they will bond to well weathered (i.e. dirty) plastic.
My mother had poor results on her furniture as the paint peeled after less
than a season. That may be the result of poor preparation but how much
effort are you willing to spent to tart up the plastic beforehand?

I'll be looking for a nice wooden set that I can keep regularly oiled and
the plastic will be consigned to the scrap heap.
