It's the unofficial FAQ, because the official charter sucks. This is
what people who post here mostly adhere to, regardless of what the net
nannies in UNNC may say :P
A mini-guide to the process of publishing (i.e. some idiot do's and
don'ts) would be appreciated... though I may end up doing one myself
from bitter experience (the best kind) as my novel will be doing the
"Please publish me!!!" rounds in a few months, after Xmas.

[1] What is UCAW?
[G] Generally
UCAW is aimed to be a UK-centered group where writers, and those
interested in the subject of writing can discuss work and opinions
about writing in the English language.
[i] Original writing
Somewhere for UK writers (of all genres/forms) to post their work and
hopefully have it read and critiqued by others. Somewhere for UK
readers to cast their eye over new writers work for interest.
[ii] Publishing
For people to ask questions, offer insights and assistance with the
practicalities of getting work published in the United Kingdom.
[iii] Discussion
Readers, academics and writers can use UCAW to discuss the work of
published authors, points on style and grammar, and anything else that
roughly fits in.
[2] What is acceptable posting?
[G] Generally
Everything should be in text, not HTML. As per pretty much anywhere on
UseNet, personal abuse is unacceptable and so is spam. Unqualified
links to URL's will be ignored, and even qualified ones are rarely
connected to. If a point is to be made, make it in your post.
[i] Original writing
It's probably a good idea to prefix the header with [story] or [poem]
just so people know what you're about. The size of a post is up to you
but anything over 1000 lines is *very* unlikely to be read, anything
over 500 and you're pushing it. This isn't a hard and fast rule, but
from experience shorter posts are more likely to be read. Break up
larger stories into instalments and deliver them over time if you feel
you have to post a large work.
If someone does comment on work you post it is a good idea to
acknowledge that they have done so either by e-mail or if you have a
response that would benefit the group, in the group itself. This is
simple courtesy and will make any future postings more likely to
attract further attention. (Or in simpler terms - if someone has the
decency to devote some time to you, have the decency to thank them...
didn't your mum teach you manners?)
[ii] Publishing
If you offer any opinions regarding publishing, it would help if you
qualify comments with your experiences. It will add some weight to
your observations. Again, this isn't a hard and fast rule, just a
suggestion.
