Assuming a 20 pin ATX PSU counts as vintage.......................

Once or twice I've got away with splicing the extra 4 pin block onto the
existing wires of a 20 pin PSU, so what's to stop me hotwiring the 24 pin
connector on the print side of the MOBO?

I could've sworn I had a spare 24 pin ATX PSU - But some inconsiderate git
seems to have "borrowed" it!

My first 24pin MOBO was an ECS GS7610 from Maplin - that had a yellow
sticker over the extra 4 receptacles, so I assumed it was optional and built
the case with a 20pin PSU.

When confronted with a blank screen and not much else happening either I
phoned Maplin customer support - I was soon back in the shop buying a 24pin
PSU.

You can hotwire on the solder side of the PCB - but the 12V part of the
cable bundle can quickly become the weakest link!

I would not hotwire it, I'd get an adapter if anything
