We've discussed this a bit, and the general idea was it would be best to
meet at the Apple Store in Regents Street.
Should we meet up in the middle of the day? Go to a local restaurant,
like a Japanese or an Oriental Fusion place? If we'd prefer, we can
always shop, drop, and then in the evening to to our original Ethiopian
in Caledonian Road- it's only an underground ride...
Anyway, let's choose a date. We want it to be as convenient as possible
for the greatest number; convenientest for the mostest.
Here's a target: Friday 13th of November. We traditionally did Friday to
avoid the horrors of the Expo on the Saturday. But that's no longer an
issue. So is Saturday 14th better? Remembering that Saturday at the
Apple Store might be a bit heaving, and so might Oxford Street in
general.
Or would people prefer a later date, to fit better with Christmas
shopping?

Seems a good idea.

Stupidly nerdy? Have you forgotten your audience?
Definitely use meet-o-matic, I say. I'd set it up myself but my brain is

How do I pick a day that isn't Friday 13th? I'm out of holidays so can

Hmm. I have a half day still to take so it isn't entirely impossible...

So, the substance of this post is "I don't know".

According to the site, I can only add a date by starting a new meeting.
So I have- it's called 'the real ucsm works outing', and the url is:

It now has the Friday and the Saturday available to check, but I've lost
the previous responses. So please, in the interests of technology, log

Sounds like an idea worth having.
I really do feel it's time for another visit to Tate Modern, just for a
start, not to mention an Ethiopian restaurant.

What time is dinner likely to start at? Presumably fairly early if
you've been hanging around all afternoon already?

In the past yes; what usually happens is that we go to a pub, then on to
a restaurant (and usually an Ethiopian one). So the pub takes us up to
about 1900, when we hit the restaurant.
Have I got that right? I'm open to correction...

Hmmm.
Not concrete, but I thought we might meet at the Apple Store at Regent

I shan't be able to get to the Applestore before mid afternoon- maybe
1600? But the surrounding Oxford Street prairie is full of interesting
grazing anyway. And there's the NEW WHIZZY DIAGONAL CROSSING at Oxford

Yes; the timing will depend on the train times for our far-flung

That's me too. Blind faith that it is susceptible to software update.
All we need is one more on the day and we'll have a nursery rhyme for

Heck, even if they just let us re-programme the left and right swipes to

I thought Input Managers were Officially Naughty in Apple's eyes?

Yes, they do elicit spankage from Cupertino.

I could do without that in my life right now.

Don't you turn and offer the other cheek?

I'm more the "turn and brandish the machette shouting 'want some, do ya?!'"
type.

A bit like when I wanted to get a stylus to use with the iTouch. The
soft keyboard is all very well, but totally hopeless for entering things
like Wifi passwords, where typing autocorrect doesn't work.- I tried and
failed with one for hours... so I decided to get a stylus. I asked at
the Applestore and a deep, deep frost descended. Absolutely not. Steve
didn't want styluses involved.
Bugger him. I got one by mail order, and it's worked perfectly for that
purpose.

I'm still not sure if I can commit but call in at 11 Cork Street if you
have a chance.
The Ethiopean in Portsmouth was very good for those with longer
memories.

Well just join in if you can. Yu know where we'll be; all welcome.

I returned a load of Patrick Heron's work there, when I was a lad.

??
You nicked it, and then once you'd got it home realised it didn't match
the rug??

I took an exhibition of his work back to London in, Google tells me,
1988. Blimey, time flies!

I turned off auto-correct within 15 mins of getting the iPhone: all it
did was get in my way; completely useless as far as I'm concerned.
However, I thought auto-correct was turned off in password fields and
number-only fields.
Can you not improvise with a toothpick?
> Can you not improvise with a toothpick?
No, the touch screen needs to feel the capacitance of the finger to
register a touch. Which is why the stylus has a soft tip of conducting
foam, and a metal shaft. A wooden object doesn't work. And my fingers
are too spatulate (or maybe just fat) to work even remotely accurately.
I know you can slide across the screen from below until the right letter
shows, but that's too slow and too approximate for real life. And in
entering passwords, it's totally hopeless.
Before I found the stylus, I improvised with a piece of the conducting
foam that's used, spatched onto the pins, to ship chips. And it kind of
worked, but it's not stiff enough to be pleasant to use, even when taped
to a metal shaft.

...and am I right in thinking it's the Friday, not the Saturday? I've
not really been paying attention.
If nothing's happening until four-ish, I could probably just take the
afternoon off work rather than the whole day, which would help as at the
moment my holiday days are running out...

That's right - Friday.

My cunning plan is just to slope off work a little early and avoid
taking any time off.
