Unfortunately not. I didn't realise there were invitations since I must
have requested one from Spotify early on but looking at my account it
seems invites are only available to premium subscribers.

If anyone else wants one, reply to me by email, as I have 5 going spare
at the moment - I'm a premium subscriber.

It's addictive - especially if you have an iPhone / iTouch and spend a
lot of time in the car.

Sweet Home Alabama - sheer class.
Another Brick in the Wall - coool.
My ears are bleeding, softly.
And while I'm here, why does one need an invite? I just downloaded
Spotify and signed up, no invitation required.

Did i miss something? what is the invite for? I've had spotify for
months.

If you go to <www.spotify.com>, it redirects you to the english web
site, and offers Spotify Premium for 9.99 a month, or Spotify Free,
which requires an invite.

Free accounts. I want to try it out before I subscribe to anything, and
the free accounts require invites.
Cheers,
Ian
In my case, I can put up with the ads (I thnk, we'll see) and I cannot
really justify paying ten quid a month for this at this point

Well, the big advantage of the subscription is that you can cache stuff
for offline listening. But the value this offers really depends on how
long you spend away from 3G or WiFi connections during a typical week.

I wondered too - I'm a bit a hazy about how I got an account earlier
this year but fairly certain an invitation wasn't needed back then.

Good Spot.
They have opened the gates for the UK. It was closed to 'invite only' in
September after the iPhone/iPod Touch application launched to prevent
their infrastructure diving under the stress of that accouncement.

Ahem. Announcement...
Funny, google has Results about 59,600 for accouncement.

Where?
Go to the spotify site and you pay 9.99 for an account, or get a free
account by invitation only.

From the site it seems you can only use the Premium version (ten quid a
month) on mobile, including iPhone.

Yes, sadly.
However, for less than the cost of buying 1 album a month, I get an
almost unlimited choice of music to listen to.
--
SteveH
Oh, indeed, of course.
In my case, I suspect the free version is quite ok for my needs.
Whoops. I clicked the home page links while signed in.
Yes, it's still invite only. Sorry for the mis-information. Normal
service will be resumed shortly after I take myself outside for a kicking.

all this said, i am now having a problem with my connection!
With all the discussion I decided to have a look and the one thing that
I couldn't find anywhere on their site was a list of the
albums/artists available.
I suppose they are at that stage of word of mouth marketing from kid to
kid where "yeah, they've got everything" (and where the kid's knowledge
of "everything" extends back to just the last year or two of the pop
charts) is all they can cope with. Is it too much to hope that they
might have classical music and at sensible bit rates?

You have to be a bit more specific than "classical" but a search for
Beethoven produces a very long list which as you scroll towards the
bottom just gets longer, sample here:

This is why you should try the free version if you can get an invite
(or wait until they go open again).
> Is it too much to hope that they
>might have classical music and at sensible bit rates?
They have lots of classical at sensible bit rates. I checked out the
complete 14 concert playlist for the Bradford International Orchestra
Concert Season plus Chamber Music Season on Spotify, with only one or
two missing items.
Who are you interested in?

Wow, I just made it apparently - signed up for free account without

I find they have more than iTunes does.
> Is it too much to hope that they

Seems so. Premium version gives you higher bit rates.
That might have come out wrong. What I meant to say was the free
version bit rate seems fine to me (160 kbps), and premium version users
have the option of that or 320 kbps.
> Is it too much to hope that they
> might have classical music and at sensible bit rates?
They've had almost every obscure bit of music I've searched for, from
Root Boy Slim and the Sex Change Band, through several variations of
Elgar's Serenade in E minor, to Shostakovich's Symphony No.5 (rather
oddly by the Mexico City Philharmonic).
--
Pd
Shostakovich 5 is hardly obscure !!! I would have said it is mainstream
repertoire!
The Barber string quartet might be considered obscure, but even then his
rearrangement of the second movement for orchestral strings is well known.
--
Graham J
I don't know the piece, but asking for "barber string quartet" gives
all of Op11, plus lots of parts. Recorded artists are the Endellion
SQ, Chester SQ, and Leonard Bernstein + the NY Phil.

What about the Bingham quartet recording ...?
My point being you have to struggle to choose a truly obscure piece of music
to illustrate the original assertion.

Granted, they weren't good examples to illustrate obscurity.
--
Pd
Well, I wasn't making that assertion - I was showing what the results
are on a piece that you deemed possibly obscure, in case that was
helpful. Is it not?
Cheers - Jaimie

I like my coffee how I like my women... frothing.
They have just one of Stockhausen's Klavierstke (the one with the
interminable repeated chord in the beginning). Looking for various
industrial/alternative bands brought _some_ results, but not the ones I
was after. Oh, ok; it doesn't know, say, This Morn' Omina but it does
have quite a bit of Diamanda Galas and the Tiger Lillies (but these are
kind of better known). Looking up classical guitarists is, again, a
mixed bag, mostly brings up the kind of 'top of the pops' of the genre.
Thank-you Stuart - I was worried that a trial investment of 10 would
result in nothing at all.
Thanks also, this is useful to know.
> Who are you interested in?
Well, all of them. Or rather, those that might be a choice buy, but on
the other hand might not. Being able to listen to two or three versions
of so-and-so's piano concerto and decide on the best would be value for
money for me.
On the other hand, I could just keep listening to Radio 3's "Building a
Collection" and buy whatever they recommend.:-)
Putting the words "Stockhausen" and "band" together reminds me that I think
he wrote a piece for rubber bands. Is that obscure ?!?
--
Graham J
It's a pity there's the hassle of the invitations to the free version.

I seem to be using Spotify to preview music I then buy - maybe force of
habit.
Just out of interest, before I start fishing or an invite, do they have
any of the following artists of varying levels of obscurity? I always
struggle to find my kind of music on online sites (and often in record
shops; thank the gods for Spillers Records) and I wonder whether Spotify
will be any different.

<spotify artist track counts>
Ah, you beat me to it, posting yours while I was reading and responding
to posts and searching spotify...
Where there were discrepancies in our figures, it's normally because
ordered by Artist and then subtracted from the total the few at the top
and bottom that weren't the artist in question. Or counted them
manually. :P
I do that a lot...

It was a slashed capital O.
Thanks for checking all these for me; tallies up reasonably well with
what Pd found, and gives me a good idea of what's on there. It seems
like it is worth giving a go - but now I need to find someone who still

I thought these were one of those bands which only ever appeared on
compilation albums and label samplers, so this surprised me.

Yeah, that's what I like about them.
Thanks for doing that for me. I think I might give it a go - anyone got

Sorry can't help there - I got my free account on 28 August, a few days
before they required invites (from 1 September), and I would need to pay
for a Premium account to obtain the ability to send invites to others.
