I dislike DRM, I dislike iTunes. I won't ever spend a penny there.
This is crazy. They are giving away iTunes downloads with coke & diet
coke..
Has anyone had good results retrieving album artwork?
So don't. Simply registering a credit card doesn't cost you anything.

Worked pretty well for me. Tends to favour American album art but otherwise
it's ok. Bit hit and miss though, so if you have a lot of stuff that has
the metadata filled in by the CDDB it may or may not find it.
There's also a widget that will grab stuff from Amazon. Can't remember
the name now but I posted the link a few days ago.

I opened an account with my card, then removed my card from my account
straight away. I get the free tracks and artwork no problem.

Nope. Use another program. There are dozens out there. Of course, many
of them want you to pay...

Good. Then don't.

But not to you as you need an account.

Many people.
They also give away itunes downloads every week _if_ you have an
account. AND, you don't have to drink coke to get them.

Do you? I didn't. Maybe it was because I already had an apple ID.

Me too.

I like iTunes. Don't feel either way about the iTunes store, although I
won't spend money there.

Why is that crazy? You don't have to use them if you don't want.

yes. Works pretty well.

Not for me. I've just obtained an external drive and copied using some
tar voodoo the entire contents of my iPod to the drive and re-imported
back into iTunes, with the artwork thing enabled just to see what it
did.
The results were variable. Some albums were totally incorrect - one
self-titled album by an obscure act with a common English word as their
name was replaced by something completely different that contained the
word. Some other albums were replaced with artwork of compilations of
the same name.
The worst case, though, was what happened with a number of jazz albums.
Titles on Atlantic, Columbia and Blue Note had their cover designs
taken from re-issues which had the original artwork covering only a
quarter or less of the cover, the rest containing a generic 'Classic
Album Series' type artwork.
Many albums couldn't be found at all. Others were replaced with artwork
from those 2-on-1 CD reissues - I always amend those kinds of CDs to
act as two seperate albums in iTunes.

Indeed. It isn't foolproof but it is better than it was before, where
you had to do it with a flakey applescript or manually.

Quite right too - you can't get enough bad things happening to jazz
albums :-)

still better than nothing. It is easier to get rid of the ones that are
wrong.
