These lists are quite interesting, but don't you think it's a bit
ghoulish the way they just tell you when the person died?

I'd quite like to know when they were born as well.

Thank you to everyone who proffered birthday greetings (as well
as to those who planned to do it then found owls and/or wombats
had foiled them). And to that wondrously mysterious mechanism,
the Birthday-O-Matic, and its stalwart Duty Engineer.

It was a pretty good day, all in all. Nice weather. As per my
annual ritual, I picked the apples off my Spartan tree (24 came
to term this year). Spent the pm and early eve with friends in
town. Rec'd two phone calls, one from well-wishing friend, the
other from sister in NZ (also wishing well). Did a bit of non-
stressful computing. Yawned. Scratched. Wrote this...

No mistaking that sentiment ;-)

How's it going with the ns[1], btw?

1. A friend[2] of mine used to do a job that meant popping over to
Northern Ireland for the odd day here and there. One day he was looking
through a local paper there and was very pleased to see that many of the
flat-share and lonely hearts ads. stated that the occupants/lonely
hearts were not involved in 'the troubles'. Until someone else pointed
out that 'ns' in an ad. meant the same in NI as it did in London.

2. You've met him in fact, the ambulance man who came to your birthday
dinner.

I had to read your post about three times before I got what you were
talking about. :-) It's going well actually - no slip ups. Occasional
twangs of craving but very briefly. I feel so much better. Ran round
the park and then walked five miles yesterday. Shame I'm having a
mid-life crisis though.

There are times of those, but they pass quickly.

Now I look at smokers and it seems a really odd thing to do. It seems a
lifetime away!

I hope so. This one is shite. Lost interest in everything. Lonely.
Lost all creativity and ambition. Blocked. Looking with horror at
90,000 word manuscript that needs total rewrite. On the skids. I am a
husk. Human detritus. Past it.

I am starting to feel that way too. Although now that I am so straight

Good age, 40. From what I remember. Even if slightly fraught; the
mid-life you know, But that really does pass. And it's a wonderful
vintage for women. But I reckon 50 was better, in every sense.

Lots to look forward to, honest.

Yikes.

I know webfurtling isn't often the best way to get out of the doldrums
[1] but I've found 43folders to have useful tips on getting things
started when you aren't feeling motivated. Google for "work the dash"
and "10+2*5".

I'm sure you're aware that there's a negative feedback loop going on
here, but just that first little bit of stuff (whether it be manuscript
related or just doing something that makes you feel good but feels like
too much effort) can turn it into a positive loop.

That came out pretty damned cheesy Merkin-style self-help guru, didn't
it? Wasn't meant to. I just know the feeling of having mountains of
Stuff and not being able to sum up the motivation to even get out of
bed.

Haven't seen that. I actually tried doing the 'Morning Pages' in the
last two weeks, and it might have had some effect actually, but at the
same time, rambling about miserable childhood stuff and the grim past
just doesn't seem to be a great thing to do to yourself every day at
7am.

The scary thing is that I am only half bothered about the mountains of
stuff. I am not prostrate with misery, just zombied out.

I was looking forward to it a lot. But there have been rude shocks, I
