Stopped using Transmission when it seemed to be causing disk I/O-related
system hangs.
Things I like about Vuse: very extensible. Things like speed scheduling and
and a web front-end are very easy to add.
Things I don't like: its appearance. It doesn't look or feel very Mac-like.
Any other clients I perhaps should be considering?

Torrent seems to work ok for me but I've not tried many others.

On the Mac? under MacOS X?
<Google> ah, it's in beta. Might give that a try, thanks.
Actually, now I've looked at Transmission's web site again it appears to
have come on quite a lot since I last used it. Anyone here using it
currently?

Yup. Doesn't seem to have changed all that much to me, I still use it
exactly the same as always (fire up a .torrent file, choose content to
download if less than all, let it go, then clean up later).
It never has given me any i/o trouble across various machines, I warn
you.

Yeah, I've been using it for about six months now (previously I used
XTorrent, but abandoned that because it started to get unstable whilst
searching, which was its `USP' for me anyway). It has been faultless
in that time. I also find the web server thing quite handy -- I can
monitor my torrents from my iPhone.

Thanks for that. Might have to give it another chance.
I quite like the look of the Terminal interface. I'd find that quite handy.

Yes, and I've had no problems with it.

Sorry, should have included a link.
I tried a few under XP and settled with Torrent so when I was looking
for one under OSX (didn't like the one in Opera) I looked for Torrent
again (and found it).

Yes I am using it as well. I upgraded XTorrent to the new version but it
is banned at one of my beloved trackers. I like both Transmission and
XTorrent, both are very Mac-like and the latest versions are very stable
here. And since my ISP stopped throttling my Bittorrent bandwidth a few
months ago I am a very happy camper.

I am using it currently. ie, at this moment. I don't do much bit
torrenting, so it does me.

Yeah, I use the iPhone interface a lot more frequently than I thought I
would.
Coupled with Prowl, I can also get alerted on my iPhone when torrents
finish downloading.

Yes, and it has. I was getting the same sort of crashes as you, but
since I went back to it maybe six months ago it has crashed all of once
(and it recovered a lot more elegantly from that crash than it used to).

Right-o. Looks like it's time to migrate, then.

Confession: I have still never used BitTorrent. I still can't figure it
out. The next issue is whether this matters.

Here's a PowerPoint explanation:
1) You can download stuff...
2) ...for free (apart from the cost of your soul, depending on what
you're downloading)
3) Your stuff comes from, and goes to, other people (`peers')
4) Sometimes it takes ages, sometimes not
5) Your ISP may or may not like you doing it too much (`throttling')
Another vote for uTorrent here (no idea how to do a mu on an iPhone!) -
I like apps to be small and efficient, and it definitely fits the bill
(whilst that bloated and fugly Vuze definitely does not!)

Cool - It was really the tech side I was looking at though. And mainly
finding the soul-stealing files in the first place.
Ah, okay. So, first, you need a client; most people in this thread,
myself included, are recommending Transmission:
<URL:http://www.transmissionbt.com/>
Download, install. Then you need to find a site with .torrent files
on it. Most people will probably point you at:
<URL:http://thepiratebay.org/>
Find what you want on there, download the .torrent file, drop it onto
the Transmission, and off you go!

It still seems to be working at the moment, though it's future is, I'm
sure, fairly uncertain. Googling for `<whatever> torrent' will generally
get you what you want anyway.
Its.

Ok, trying it out. I am already experiencing throttling, I think. My
connection is now as slow as molasses.
And this is just the originating file, not the actual download in
Transmission.
ISP traffic throttling only occurs in the peering part, downloading
the .torrent file is the same as any other web-site transaction.
The pirate bay, while not defunct, is rather more randomly hosted than
it was before the end of the court case... bits of it keep going to
sleep. <http://www.isohunt.com> is a reasonable alternate source.

Well it's now slowed to 55 bytes a second and getting slower!

The Pirate Bay's never really been the same since they moved it to a
nuclear bunker. It must play havoc with their wifi...

They've all shared their torrents, so you'll often get torrents from
other sources that reference piratebay.org. Searching for "whatever
torrent" will usually give something promising in the first couple of
results.

I run Transmission on my Linux SAN/NAS and control it using the web
interface. It works fine.
Or "whatever filetype:torrent"

You too? It's my main use of Prowl, really handy. Combined with
Jaadu VNC (within the house) and LogMeIn Ignition when out and about
and my living room media box set to default to my downloads folder,
it's really convenient.
Try BTJunkie.com as well.
thebox.bz (need to register) is excellent for UK TV, too.
You might want to combine with PeerGuardian depending on your use...
And up again, but no longer in Sweden,
but guess where?

I don't use Prowl for it often - only when downloading something I'm
interested in ASAP.
Actually, thinking about it, I actually use Hazel to notify me. Hazel
will move certain files on completion, and notify me that it's moved
them.
> Combined with
> Jaadu VNC (within the house) and LogMeIn Ignition when out and about

One specific example is that I have Hazel watch for FlashForward
episodes being fully torrented. It then creates a hard link, leaves the
original to keep seeding, moves the new link to the folder that Plex
keeps an eye on, and tells me that it's ready to watch via Prowl.
Sounds complex, but all I do is manually download the latest .torrent
file (can't be arsed to automate that bit) to the watch folder, then
start Plex after I get a notification it's ready.
