You will see an immediate benefit from most of the current range which
will cope well with the things you mention. If price is a factor then
the eMac starts at around 600 quid [no discounts mentioned, you'd need
to discuss those direct with your dealer or Apple] and will do
everything you ask of it. If you want to spend a bit more then look at
the iMac which is a thing of beauty.
I suspect that most of the G4 / G5 desktop machines would be over the
top for everyday use and the two mentioned will cope with most things
anyway.
If you want it compact then look at the 12" Powerbook, if you want
portable but BIG then look at the 17" Powerbook.

Not quite true. Discounts are given to students and faculty if you buy
from the Apple Education Online Store depending on what you buy.

You can also get refurb products at discount prices (roughly price less
VAT) but they are used, and I believe that "once a lemon, always a
lemon" so I would not recommend it.
Finally, if you plan to fly out of Heathrow even on a domestic flight,
you can get most Apple laptop computers from Dixons at the airport for
17.5% discount plus you have 30 days to return it to any Dixons store if
it goes bad. Bloody brilliant service!
Hope this is enough of an incentive to get you to get a nice stable and
great looking machine.

OTOH it could be argued that the PowerBooks are the laptop
equivalents of the PowerMacs and that the laptop equivalents of eMac
and iMac are iBook.
The standard 12" iBook is excellent value, and the 14" gives a more
easily readable screen for those with less than 20/20 vision.

iBook 500 so it's out of its warranty by now, it was when I got it out
the box in as good a condition (in fact better than some I've had) that
we'd paid top whack for.
