QUESTION:
Does anyone know if I can use it as an ipod and video player etc even
if I don't activate the phone side of things? If so, I'd quite happily
buy one and just use it as a media player until a proper hack is
released. I almost bought an ipod video out here but the tiny screen
(compared with iphone) put me right off.
October isn't THAT far away I know but chances are, it won't be
released on Orange anyway.
So... does anyone know if it will work as an ipod, photo viewer and
video player without activating the phone side of it?
thanks in advance
Mark
p.s. if you were me would you bring 3 or 4 home to provide for friends
at cost? Or maybe sell on ebay?
There have been several articles noting how to use it like that by canceling
the activation process before it completes (or something like that).
That way you get a very expensive PDA/iPod with WiFi....
However... One article suggested that any future software upgrade *may* stop
it being useable as such (i.e. without an active SIM). But you never know!

What you need to do is use a false Social Security number (99-99-9999 or
something like that) - that activates the phone, but puts you onto a
'Pay as you go' contract. - Voila - full functionality, except for the
phone.

Surely in order to buy one, you'd have to sign up for 2 years of AT&T
contract, wouldn't you? I suppose you could do this and then go AWOL
on the contract but it seems a very desparate way of getting an iPhone
that isn't yet unlockable to actually *work* in the UK...

Nope. You go into a store, plonk down your $5-600 and go home. It's when
you plug it into iTunes and 'activate' it that you have to sign up for
the contract.
