Her husband uses a Powermac G4- the old oval shaped corner one- and a
MBP.
The MBP can sync fine to the iPhone, but it won't show up at all on the
old Macbook, or on the Powermac. Which is a nuisance.
In general terms, is it possible that a new iPhone can't connect to and
be recognised by a white MacBook, or a five year old Powermac?

According to <http://www.apple.com/iphone/specs.html> they *require*
USB 2 and certain versions of iTunes. I could imagine that would take
that old MacBook out of the running, and maybe the PowerMac too.
It looks like they need to upgrade their Macs. Note there will be
discounts tomorrow :-)

I was wondering about USB2, although as I'm not there I can't check.

My G4 recognises and syncs fine with my new iPhone 3G S... it's an
elderly G4 dual 867, circa 2002, (mirrored drive doors) running 10.4.11
and iTunes 9.02. So in theory both your daughter's Macs should be OK.
What version of iTunes is she using? Is she plugging the phone diretly
into the Mac's USB ports, or into a hub? Mine didn't play ball with a
hub, but it's fine going right into the Mac.

I can confirm that USB2 is an absolute requirement, even for the original
iphone, and that USB1 doesn't work.
Now that's weird. I gave my old(er) 1st gen iPhone to a friend with (I was
almost 100% certain) a G3 14" iBook.
I will check tomorrow.

An iBook G4 (which it would be if about four years old) running 10.4.11
should be fine, as long as it has a new enough version of iTunes. All
iBook G4s have USB 2.0.
The iPhone 3GS require iTunes 8.2, which runs on Mac OS X 10.4.11.
The iPhone 3G requires iTunes 7.7, which runs on Mac OS X 10.3.9. (The
original iPhone requires iTunes 7.3.)
If the computer is actually an iBook G3 (which was discontinued in
October 2003, so it is at least six years old) then it has USB 1.1 and
won't support an iPhone.
A PowerMac G4 also has USB 1.1, but you could add a USB 2.0 PCI card to
resolve that problem.

Probably the easiest thing to do is get them to update iTunes on both
machines and see if that makes a difference. It shouldn't do any harm.

Dunno - but: do run Software Update on the 10.4.11 Mac(s) and see if
there's anything missing. There's an odd extra wotsit to go along with
iTunes on 10.4, I forget the details, but I do recall it's for talking
to external devices that are not iPods.

Innaresting.
I'll talk to my daughter about this- I'm pretty sure that's the kind of
iBook she has.
But I hear that her employer is getting her a MacBook for Christmas
(she's jolly well earned it, and anyway they were at school together and
she is his Rommel) so it matters very little now...
I do hope it's a black one, although 200 is a lot to pay for cool. Do
they still do the black ones?

Peter
Nope, they only do white ones and silver ones now.

I thought MacBooks only came in white (polycarb) now? The 13" silver
ones are MacBook Pros.

Chris
That seems to be the case.

OK - I thought they may still have the 13" silver MacBooks that they had
before they did the MBPs. Never mind - still no black. Which is a shame.

Indeed, but the unibody models are completely lovely.

You're right about that.

Question is, what changed when the silver 13" MacBook became a silver
13" MacBook Pro?

FireWire came back and it gained an SD slot.

It didn't regain a separate sound-in, sound-out pair of sockets. You
still have just one port that has to be designed as in or out in the
Sound system pref panel; for separte sound in-out you have to go to the
15" ...

Which isn't the end of the world but is, well, a bit crap.
Hmmm. That doesn't seem like the difference between "consumer" and "pro"
to me. Is the screen the better-quality panel of the other Pros?
It's certainly a lot better than the older WhiteBooks. I've not been
able to compare it to either other Pros or the late 2009 WhiteBook.
