Anyways - has anyone had any experience of getting the education
discount at a real Apple shop?
Thanks, Rob
Not in recent years. Long time ago I asked my local Apple retailer and
although it was possible to get the education discount from them there
was a bit of paperwork involved to prove that one was entitled to the
discount. Presumably this hasn't changed. These days I simply log onto
the Apple Education store and take it from there.

Not personally but it is possible.
A friend rang the education number from Plymouth and collected a MacBook
Pro in London en route to Budapest. Not sure whether she paid over the
phone or on collection, or how they verified her student status.

cut that out to reply
Well, got through eventually and they said they'd apply the discount, no
problem, subject to proof of ID.
Reason for all of this is I've just ordered online, and delivery 15 Dec
for a 27" i5.
So, I'll toddle up there (Meadowhall, Sheff) now and report back.
Thanks all, Rob
Well, all done, they actually bettered the discount by a couple of quid,
which was nice.
Cancellation of the online order didn't work - met with a 'phone this
number' message. Phoned the number and it's a glitch in the system - the
order had cancelled without charge.
First time I've ever been in an Apple shop - very impressed, friendly
without sycophancy, and they must have had at least 10 staff in store,
which meant I only waited a couple of minutes.
Meadowhall a different experience - a piece of me died today.
Incredible. Depressing.
But now to clear some desk space for the whole 27" and migrate.
Uplifting :-)
