Id like a decent W7 compatible wifi printer for him for xmas.
Im asking here as I know that most of you lot make "proper" decisions
when it comes to hardware, and might have a good idea.
it needs to be colour, and the carts not too expensive to replace, it
doesnt even have to be photo quality really...
What ya got?

Not everyone here would hold that against him. ;-)

I wonder if you could still find a Canon ip5200r somewhere. I have the
ip4000 (shared on this XP Mini and our main workhorse) and the ip5000r
that we had to get to be able to network print from OSX.
Cheap carts here:

3 sets (new / 15 carts), 23 quid.
Very fast, very quiet, auto duplex.
Cheers, T i m
What about one of the Brother inkjet multifunction printers? The ones
that have a suffix of CW are WiFi enabled, and ones that have a suffix
of CN have wired ethernet - if the printer is being sited near the
router, it may reduce complexity to use wired ethernet though there's
not much difference in the prices.

My money would be on the Brother or Canon too [1], make sure you get one
with 4 or 5 cartridges, not a 2 cartridge printer as they are cheaper to
run long term.
[1] I'd edge more towards the Canon, better machine long term.

The Samsung color lasers have become quite affordable,
but the WiFI extra is relatively expensive,
Jan
I had a samsung colour laser before I got my canon MF printer, and I
really wouldn't recommend it. Its paper handling was very poor and
colour reproduction not up to the cheapest of inkjets. I sent it back to
get the canon.

I've been using a Canon i965 for years and its predecessor for years
more. These are now well beyond their sell-by date but they use 6 inks -
unlike today's 5 ink ones which use 2 blacks - one pigment and the other
dye. The 6 ink ones add photo magenta and photo cyan and give superb
results. The real beauty of them is that the ink cartridge is
transparent, with half a clear tank with a little prism at the bottom
which tells the software that the tank is empty. At that point you can
*see it is empty but the sponge in the other half still has a useful
life. The software.lets you go on printing (with warning) right to the
point where you can see that the head is getting no ink - but manages to
stop you getting quite to the stage where you spoil the last sheet.
Unfortunately no wireless or ethernet although I have had them running
on a Netgear print server.
Sadly I can't find a replacement of the same specs in Canon unless I go
up to A3 - the price is not far off what I paid - not cheap - but the
size is too much alongside the Epson colour laser for work what is
mainly on glossy A4 sheets.
I guess that the 5 ink - and much cheaper - ones would suit the OP - the
2 blacks give good photo prints with one but good text with the other.
