I'm after some sort of logo/distinctive way of writing 'Apple Juice'
that will work in B&W if necessary - and not much more than that. Any
suggestions on how to approach a designer, what to ask for, what to
expect to pay and so on?

You can try approaching a good local copy/print shop, quite often they
do design services. If you have an idea of what style or image you'd
like to project beforehand that will help a lot, or you may get any old
cack. eg. If you've seen something similar you like, a certain font that
is what you like, do you want an image or just text, text inside the
image or beside it, modern, clever or classic design....
Prices can vary a lot, but expect to pay a min of 60-100 pounds, more if
you want a colour and a b/w version. It's all tax-deductible as you
know.
Sometimes individual graphic designers advertise in the yellow pages -
try ringing a few with your job spec and seeing which ones show the most
interest, get some quotes and also see if they will send you samples of
other work (they should do).
Alternatively if you have a local college that does graphic design
courses you may get a student willing to do you a logo for cash in hand,
if you put an advert on their notice board. Probably more inventive
too...

with my own logo, and most people won't wait that long :) I'm not
really a designer)

It's a bit late in the year to go to students, that way - they are all
about to go away on their hols!
But find your local Art and Design college: Cardiff School of Art and
Design, Graphic Communication course
http://www.uwic.ac.uk/schools/art.htm
, go to the end-of-year shows - which will be fun (better still phone up
and get an invite to the opening (free booze etc)) - locate a student
whose work you like. Then approach and ask them to design a logo. They
are all broke, so an offer of ready cash will snapped up!

I do! They are!
Thanks for the various suggestions.

That must be why my wife prefers to listen to nothing.

I have more sympathy for the poor sods who have to set and mark the
bloody things.

I spy a holy war about to erupt. Nothing is better than harpsichords.

Not really, commenting on sigs. is for moffies.

Since "anything is better than nothing" then we can safely conclude that
anything is better than harpsichords.

Possibly - what's a moffie?

I side with Rowland here. And in 90% of cases I actually *dislike*
guitars.

Afrikaans slang for gays, queers, homosexuals, chickenshits and the
like. Beats me how the chicken ties in with the previous three but there
you go, have always maintained that Afrikaans is a funny language.
Fire at will. And don't bring Andre Spies along, as he's just about the
only one I can appreciate speaking in that language, and shall thus be
inclined to give myself up without any fight or shield of sorts.

Oh yes. The harpsichord. That symbol, that weapon, that banner, that
eternal sceptre of pop music. The farmer's plough, the blacksmith's
hammer, the fisherman's nets, the hunter's gun, the writer's pen, the
singer's ... harpsichord.
This is why *I'm* the one who gets to write an encyclopaedia, and you
program user interfaces.

24. The words "Come on, come on" in the chorus of a song invariably
betray a moment in which the author simply had nothing to say. This
precise betrayal occurs in surprisingly many well-known songs.

Oh good :-) - I'd better do some more commenting on sigs, hadn't I?

Aren't all languages a bit odd?

I would, except that I don't employ anyone.

For sure there aren't enough harpsichords in use these days; doesn't
mean that guitars are *better*, just that they're more popular.
Harpsichords can't be chucked in a case and lugged along the Tube to the
rehersal room, for example. Ever wondered by Led Zep's John Paul Jones
played bass guitar rather than organ most of the time?
The thing is that any statement along the lines of 'nothing is better
than guitars' is a bit daft. Jimi Hendrix could handle keyboards
alright - but... Guitars were where he was at, man, and he even managed
to create baroque music that way - yes! For sure guitars have their
place, but so do harpsichords. Just ask Scarlatti or the Stranglers.

I prefer "nothing" to harpsichords, though I prefer guitars to nothing
(even though I don't like guitars that much).
Gak, I think I've just confused myself.
