Hello All

I am thinking of replacing my desktop PC. To save a lot of tinkering,
it would seem to make sense to buy one with Linux pre-installed.

Does anyone know whether such a thing is available in the UK, and if
so, from where?

I've tried Google and turned up nothing so far.

Just remember to set BIOS as the reviews indicate.

Dabs, in terms of service, are terrible (Dabs was recently acquired by BT and
former CEO saw my rants in another NG). However, once you get the product,
all will be fine. I have had one since August and no problems _at all_.
Ships with SuSE 9.3; Make sure you get 10.1 which is the lastest; Works fine
with other distributions (tried Ubuntu, Mandrake).

Best wishes,

Roy

We will sell you a PC with Linux installed, just E-mail a spec and we'll
give you a price. We mainly deal with schools and don't advertise because
it costs money and we get enough business from word of mouth.

there are others, depending ion your budget. However, I would go for a
bare system without Microsoft tax then install a Linux Distribution
afterwards.

I've bought a few from Transtec www.transtec.co.uk - they generally come
with Suse pre-installed, but there are other options available. Their gear
is well built, sensibly priced, and they're pretty good to deal with.

eBuyer do (or used to) much the same box (usually a few quid cheaper).
As with dabs ebuyer sell on price rather than customer service so if
anything goes wrong you won't get any hand-holding, just a
return/refund/repair (if that goes smoothly).

Believe it or not Dell sell PCs with RHES pre-installed. However, they
are highend workstations and you pay extra for the privilege of having
RH installed over XP:

I didn't quite know that coming in. I heard/read negative reviews with
regards to customer service (Microdirect likewise), but was hoping to be
among the lucky ones. I was not. *sigh*

By the way, the eBuyer offers, which I know are cheaper, were brought to my
attention a few months ago. While Dabs sold it for GBP 165 at the time,
eBuyer sold it for GBP 127, IIRC.

Best wishes,

Roy

Thanks to all who answered this.

Transtek looks promising. PC Specialist
(http://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/) might also be a possibility, although
the small form factor options from Transtek look cheaper and might be
OK for me.

I've bought PCs from Armari, in the past. They tend to be a bit high-end
and specialist, but sell good kit and know their stuff. Many of their
systems can be ordered with linux instead of Windows (mine were ordered
with Windows, because it's what my clients need me to use, but one of them
has run various SuSE and Gentoo versions at times ...).

Cheers,
Daniel.
