My trusty business inkjet 1200dtwn suddenly refused to print yesterday,
advising me that two of the colour cartridges had "expired". It appears
that HP chip the cartridges in a way that can't be overidden by any
straightforward user procedure. So, despite both of the cartridges in
question being over 60% full it wouldn't let me print with them. Nor would
it print in black only as, apparently, black also requires colours even if
"black printer cartridge only" is selected. Or, putting it more simply, HP
are telling me to spend another 40 on their cartridges or they won't let me
do any more printing.

Now this really pissed me off - so, out with the toolbox, prise off a front
cover, saw a hole through the plate behind, remove the white wire from a
9-pin connector and..."hey presto" I get to use the rest of the ink that I
have paid for - and a big "fuck you" to HP.

Now I know that HP would say that this chipped cartridge and "expiry"
business is there to protect customers from damaging their print heads by
using dodgy or old cartridges. However, a simple warning light would be
sufficient for this purpose. And as for no black printing - that's clearly
there to ensure that people WILL buy more cartridges. It is so obviously
extortion that I think they have been forced to let users override the
settings in later models. What a bunch of thieves!

Nice one. I've printed your fix out for future reference. (On my old

They're as bad, I binned a cheap Epson because it wouldn't recognise
compatible carts.

My current inkjet, a Canon MP600, is very good about it - it gives no
problem with clone carts, has five separate tanks, and when it ran out
of the big black ink tank it said "Hey, I've run out of the big black
ink tank - would you like to carry on printing anyway with the small
black ink tank?".

Mind you, fifty quid for a full set of original tanks, but I'm low
usage so that's a once-in-two-years affair.

It prints nicely too.

Cheers - Jaimie

None of the HP printers I have had have ever gave this problem, apart from
they don't tell me how much ink is in a cart If its been refilled.

That print engine used by the series of Canon is the best i have ever come
across. I took one out of the loft a few months ago, has been up there, best
part of a year, turned it on, and installed it, did a test print, 100%
perfect print, and that was on a compatible cartridge. Most epsons, if you
dont use them for a couple of weeks, you need to waste a third of the ink
cleaning the cartridges.

Umm, waste of time and effort, it's a simple registry change to stop
them expiring cartridges.

Oh yeah? What is this simple registry hack for a business inkjet 1200 then?
I am sure all the owners who can't print because of expired cartridges would
like to know. All the people who have tried countless ways of overcoming
the problem via software would love to know - especially all those who have
tried hacking the registry and failed. Do let us in on the secret please.

1) Click on Start button, run
2) Type in regedit, enter
3) Navigate to HKLM/software/Hewlett-Packard/HP Printers/HPWH
Toolbox/Common
4) In the right panel, right click on Ink, pick modify
5) Change 0100 to 0000
6) Save and reboot

Works for plenty of HP printers.

Everything I read said that software approches were unsuccessful with the
business inkjet 1200 - no onboard CMOS battery to remove either. As these
are deigned to be network printers in some versions, including mine
(1200dtwn) I suspect that the printer stores the data and ignores registry
settings

Worked fine for my Business Inkjet 1100DN and I'm fairly sure a
colleague used it with his 1200DN. It's not the printer that refuses the
print job AFAIK, it's the HP driver software you install on the PC.

Well, all I can say is that mine was ethernet connected and the registry
tweak worked first time. Cartridges became an awful lot cheaper after
that because I could buy and use expired ones off eBay.

Interesting - I might even reconnect the white wire and try it. Strange
that it isn't mentioned by anyone as working for the 1200. However,
disconnecting that wire has done the trick so I may not bother - depends how
bored I get over Christmas!

Tried it and guess what...it didn't work! HP toolbox monitor still comes up
with a warning and reports the cartridges as expired and it won't print. Not
that I was really surprised. I had googled extensively for solutions (that
is how I found the white wire trick). Everything that I found suggested
that software approaches were ineffective for the 1200, with the possible
exception of a very complicated driver hack.

Happy New Year, one and all.

Trev: the printer doesn't detect the amount of ink in the cart. It
estimates it according to usage. So, as another poster said, it may be
60% full but your usage indicates that it's used 99%.

I won't use colour printers anymore. B&W for me, anything else gets
printed on one of the colour lasers at work.

I bought an HP 4550N off u.a.c. with a complete set of toner cartridges
- 3 of each colour. Still chugging away fine 3 years on. When it
expires it'll be scrapped and will owe us absolutely nothing.
