Thanks to Chris W for the useful link, which I hadn't found. For some reason
LiveMail won't let me add to the thread because it says I havn't got a
simple MAPI mailer installed, and I need one (whatever that means).

The info in Chris's link (and indeed the whole experience with this problem)
reminds me of the planning application at the beginning of HHG

That problem fixed anyway, via WLM tools/options/general make this
application default
Goodness knows how the setting got changed: nothing *I* have interfered with
0 new messages
