I think that, having already announced the details at the beginning of
the thread, we'll stick with the original plan. I'm sure our meetup

It looks like ill be going to the Mini Maker Faire orgs meetup then heading over to the Hackspaces meetup. Jeff of TOG and Mike if Build Bright are doing the same I'm led to believe.

Ah, sounds good to me - is there a location fixed for that? I've

In a nutshell, we're a group of hackerspaces who got funding from the US

to point it to a server you operate. We don't offer any hosting

My Dad recently passed away, and thoughtfully, in his will he stipulated
that all his old radio gear should go to a radio club. As he lived in
Southend, and well, I don't, I'm looking for some where to take them to, or
even better to come and get them :-)

What you've described seems very what like a hacker/makerspace is. I'd
imagine the reason the people in your area havent moved forwards further is
that they don't have the time/money to make other things happen. setting up
a hackspace takes time, and finding affordable space can be really
difficult when you have to go to work, look after the kids, and other life

To hack or to make is all part of the DIY spectrum.

A winebar might sound fancier than a pub, but it's all alcohol, heck a

The donations and time will come from the community, so working against the
existing group probably won't work, unless they're really unresponsive.

Hi all.
I have been inspired by TheGeekGroup to make a "hacker space" like theirs
but in my local city.
I live in a city that was one of the biggest in industry back in the day.
So we have a lot of old people with skill but now that industry is not very
big here the skills are no longer used so are being eroded away.

Jake, it's interesting to me to see your perspective on this, because it makes me realise how obvious the self-identification as "hacker" was to us back in 2009.

Russ and Jonty, the founders of the London Hackspace, both have a software development background (among many other talents.) They come from a school of open source culture where communal project work and permissive licensing is the default mode of getting things done.
