Subject: Status of emfm?

Hello all,

Is anyone working on this behind the scenes? It seems to have gone quiet on
the list.

I ask as I will be working on how we get audio streams out of the venues
and wanted to see if there was anyone to give them to from emfm.

All the best,

Sol

Hi,

Yeah, it seems to have died down.. I haven't been working behind the scenes, but as far as the audio streams go there isn't anything to do anyway: I've got the setup already and done this a number of times.

What would you stream out? The setup I normally use can accept multiple streams or pull them, transcode them and send them out to a deflection host.

Gr,

Koen

Great, I was just going to be offering analogue outputs from the mixing
desks and let emfm take it from there.

Have you confirmed running of this on the main list? I only ask as I
thought we were still approaching people to fill this roll, may be worth
re-offering.

All the best,

Chalres

I have not confirmed it, no, as I was not yet picking this up as a task,
but given that it needs to be done and that I have the experience, I surely
want to go for it!

I can work with analog inputs, np. Let me get my project planning for the
next half year into order, and get things seriously on the rails regarding
all this.

Sorry about not updating you guys!

I've actually done a bit of work on the FM license - and it looks very
much like we won't get the RSL.  There's already a number of RSLs
going on in the area, including one which is as a trial for a local
community station.  Ofcom RLS person also said that they're getting
flooded by license applications for olympic stations, and the
turnaround time will likely be quite slow.

Therefore, looks like we'll have to do it purely streaming.  Which, to
be honest, makes life a lot easier and also less expensive -
especially as it seems we've got the kit to do streaming done already.

Hey you lot!

I am still here!  However, I feel like we've not made much progress.
We know we're not able to do a FM RSL, however what do we want to do
regarding plans integrating live streaming of talks, etc etc.?

As it happens I'm working on a project with a BeagleBoard to make an
uber low cost IP codec, (with inspired by JamesH) which this might be
an excellent test for such things.  Also, might be worth investigating
whether we can do video ... I'm fairly happy to work with people to
sort that out, OB type stuff is my specialty!

Do we want to liase with the network guys regarding our requirements?
Once we know what they are?  I'm thinking we might want a couple of
gigabit links, perhaps... but really it depends what we want to do
regarding distribution. Anyone fancy taking up that job?

Also, does anyone (I'm thinking gmc here...) want to be in charge of
collating the equipment we want to set up in the studio(s) and working
out how it's going to work together?

And finally, probably most importantly, we need a tent or structure of
some sort.  Does anyone want to follow that up?

I know I'm dishing out jobs here, but I don't want this to fail
because I'm too busy to take it all on.  And I think there are some
pretty eager people on this list who would be happy to take on some
bits and pieces(?)

I'm still here as well :)

That'd be nice, to use those beagleboard IP codecs. Would they be done in
time for EMFcamp?

As for video, i've got some experience with that. In the olden days we
had firewire, which then plugged into a laptop/machine which did the
recoding to stream-friendly codecs (ogg/theora, mpeg or webm). Software
i've used for that includes ffmpeg, vlc and some more obscure pieces of
software.

Nowadays, one would use HDMI probably.

But, it starts with the question: do we have camera's, and if so: what
kind? I'd watch out with using cheap consumer-grade cams, they tend to
have trouble focussing in the context of projector screens and are
useless in low-light conditions.

For sound and even video, 100mbit will be more than enough to transport
the recorded audio (and possibly video) to a central server or off-site
server to use as a deflection host.

As I mentioned, deflection host I haz, just needs a bit of fiddling setting
up the proper streams but that's something I can do in an hour at the
site itself.

Sure, i'm up for that. Although I said I would get into EMFM more a while
back. Turns out preps for OHM2013 are already switching into 2nd gear, and
i've cancelled about all my other projects to focus on that. But this is
something I can probably work out before EMFcamp.

I remember some emails about that, with a request from Charles about
getting a tent and some prices.

So can we get 120 uk pounds together among us?

True.... that does mean we'd need a HDMI capture card. Also, there is
fluendo. We can use that to mix  feed of a camera and screencap of a laptop
together, along with audio.
That does however mean people would need to use a specific laptop for
slides.

Another option might be a vision mixer .... I wouldn't know where to get
such a thing though..

Excellent - I don't imagine it'd be too arduous a job :)
