Ubuntu on the big screen

My friend who I keep getting to try out ubuntu is having trouble getting it to display right on his big flat screen tv.  Is there a little app or something we can do?  We already messed with all display settings on the computer and now he is playing with tv settings.

I like to read the EDID information from the TV/Monitor to get the correct display ModeLine.
