My friend who I keep getting to try out ubuntu is having trouble getting it to display right on his big flat screen tv. Is there a little app or something we can do? We already messed with all display settings on the computer and now he is playing with tv settings.

What are you using to connect the TV? Also, if you get help from the ubuntu-utah user group, you may get better help: http://utah.ubuntu-us.org/
