So as lots of you are aware of we get an OVER abundance of catalogs.  The pharmacy team has discussed just how much of these catalogs go through our mail systems and then straight through to the recycle bins.  A lot of vendors require a letter of sorts to the vendor on behalf of each recipient of the catalog which in some cases may be quite a few.  With the creation of the new myUF Market the participating vendors will have their catalogs online.  Now, what was suggested to me was if there was in some way that vendors that are on myUF market almost be required NOT to send us paper catalogs? Of course the people who do not use muUF market can still get them.  We are just trying to figure out a way to lessen or stop a very large waste process.  Any ideas or suggestions?

This is an interesting issue that you bring up, Sarah. I know at one
organization I worked at, the person who sorted our office mail also
took a couple of minutes each day to call the companies who sent us
their catalogs and asked to be removed from their mailing list. It
was an ongoing battle, but it did result in less overall junk mail for
us. Anna is going to bring this issue up in future conversations and
see what can be done from an institutional perspective. Until then,
we'll all need to be conscientious and approach it on a department by
department basis. Speaking of which, see Mike Barsaleau's (from the
UF Foundation Green Team) useful tip below.

Thanks,
Jason

Here at the Foundation, we are about to send out our monthly Green
Team newsletter and addressed this very question in one of our tips.
Here it is:

"Request to be removed from mailing lists for any unwanted catalogs,
newspapers, magazines and junk mail. Each year 19 Billion catalogs
are
mailed to American consumers. All those catalogs require more than 53
million trees and 56 billion gallons of wastewater to produce. Visit
www.catalogchoice.org or www.newdream.org/junkmail to stop unwanted
catalogs/mailings."

Although I do not have a success rate or full critique of the
websites, I have heard of good results from users.
