          SCIENCE-JOBS-DE Stellenausschreibung (vacancies)
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Department of Palynology and Climate Dynamics, Albrecht-von-Haller-Institute for Plant Sciences, University of Göttingen

We are offering a 3-year PhD position on the project:
“Modelling forest dynamics over the last 15,000 years”

Vegetation reconstructions covering the last 15,000 years are available from many regions of the world. All these records document vegetation change as a result of changing climate in combination with other factors. However, which particular change had an effect on the overall vegetation composition can usually only be hypothesized. Vegetation models have become sophisticated enough to test the effect of changes in individual parameters on the overall vegetation composition. For this PhD project the successful candidate will run vegetation models for the past to test palaeoecological hypothesis. The work will include ecological parameterization of the common European tree species and at least some of the modeling work will use the dynamic vegetation model LPG-GUESS. The detailed project will be defined in accordance with the interest and strength of the successful candidate.
Research in the vibrant and international department focuses on the reconstruction of past vegetation composition around the globe, ranging from glacial interglacial vegetation change in the Amazon to methodological studies in Brandenburg. Work on this project will be conducted in close cooperation with Prof. Thomas Hickler at the Biodiversity and Climate Research Centre in Frankfurt and the ecosystem modelling group at Lund University, Sweden.
We are seeking a motivated and independent student with an interest in ecology and/or vegetation history, together with a basic understanding of computer programming (ideally but not necessarily C++). The applicant should have a background in biology, forestry, earth sciences and/or related fields, and the general competency and willingness to work with computers. The doctoral dissertation will be written in English, and fluency in both written and spoken English is essential. The monthly gross salary for the 3-year position (salary class 13 TV-L 50%) will range within € 1,530 -1,700, commensurable with applicants experience. The applicant should be able to start in spring 2011.
The application should be written in English including the usual documents. Please do not send originals as applications will not be returned and destroyed after a retention period. Applications should be sent to the address below to arrive not later than 28th of February 2011.
The University of Göttingen is an equal opportunities employer and places particular emphasis on fostering career opportunities for female scientists and scholars. Qualified women are therefore strongly encouraged to apply. Disabled persons with equivalent aptitude will be favoured for the position.
Applications should be sent to by email to: Thomas....@biologie.uni-Goettingen.de, or by ordinary mail to: Dr. T. Giesecke, Abteilung Palynologie und Klimadynamik, Albrecht-von-Haller-Institut für Pflanzenwissenschaften, Untere Karspüle 2, 37073 Göttingen, Germany.
