The University of California at Santa Cruz (UCSC) Karate Club has a 20+ year history in studying traditional Japanese Shotokan Karate-Do as practiced by the Japan Karate Association (JKA).

In 2012, the club was disbanded due to lack of interest in the student body, compounded by a loss of instructors. However, given sufficient interest and leadership, it could always be resurrected. If you have serious interest in making this happen, please let us know.

About Karate Practice
Your path to strength in body and mind begins with learning time-tested karate techniques. First you learn to control and use your body efficiently in a self-defense situation. You learn how to build speed and power in your movements as your muscles become stronger and more flexible. But you also soon learn that physical strength and size are really not that important in a self-defense situation. Here, as in any stressful life situation, your greatest enemy is fear. Shotokan karate is the perfect environment to face and defeat your inner enemy. Through group training and controlled sparring, your mind and body begin to flow as one.
