Hi,

Is there a place to submit suggestions or requests for things we'd like to try?  How about doing it here?  If there's a better way, please let me know!  Here are some things I'd like to try my hand at:
  • glass staining
  • glass blowing
  • throwing clay
  • fireworks (!)
  • wood and metal turning
  • welding
  • cheese
  • candles
Please add more to the thread, second the ones you like, or slate the ones you think are rubbish (I absolutely stand by the fireworks suggestion though).

Cheers,

Charlie

Here's good, so's the wiki. I'm fine with either.

Ok here then:
  • glass blowing
  • molding and casting (metals, polymers etc)
  • wood and metal turning + cnc ing
  • welding
  • cheese
  • aquafarming
  • brewing the perfect coffee
I'm sure I'll think of many more right after I press the send button.

Cheers,
George K.

Having followed the process the UK Pyrotechnics Society went through
to get themselves set up, I'm pretty certain we're not in a position
to manufacture fireworks safely (or legally, I imagine.)

Not sure if it's too late to shoe-horn this in, but another thing I'd really like to see in the makespace is bike tools and a workstand.  They needn't take up too much space – you could get a packable tool kit and stand, or a wall-mounted bracket stand – and could be extremely useful.  A toolkit with just about everything is about a grand, but you can get tools for almost everything for half that, and most things for about a tenth.  Law of diminishing returns innit?

Cheers

Charlie,

excellent suggestion! I'll add it to the kit list. We're buying major machines first, and january/february will be the time for buying hand tools and bits n bobs. that is when i'll be asking you guys in for various test inductions to pin down just how this will run.

Hope you're up for Make Merry next wednesday, we're doing candle dipping, electroplating silicone/pewter/chocolate casting and various edible delights.

Great!  Looking forward to seeing the finished article.

I'll be there at the start on Wednesday, but have another Christmas party in the evening – December is hard work!

Cheers,

Charlie

You should definitely get in touch with the Cycling Society (I have contacts if you need), they've just set up with UCLU help a bike workshop/hub that does repairs and more. They've got a lot of tools and probably have a really good idea of what should go into the workshop (not that any of you wouldn't, they've just been working on it already). Maybe some of what they have can go into the space?

Another suggestion: I study environmental geography and would really love to see some things related to sustainability -- home made energy monitoring devices, photovoltaics & alternative energy, for example. I know the UCL Sustainability staff are really interested (read:£££, advertising, support, recognition) in getting societies into more environmental projects as well. Definitely check out UCL Green Innovation: http://www.ucl.ac.uk/greenucl/whats-happening/programmes/green-innovation-ucl

Can someone clarify where on the wiki we should be adding suggestions to? The projects section seems to be a bit empty (but I only took a quick look). Also is there any forum online for us to introduce ourselves?

Hi Natasha,

If the project section feels empty feel free to make it less so. There's also the equipment section.

or

That being said the wiki is an open document so add where ever you feel it fits :)

I'm happy to edit the Project page, but it currently doesn't seem to be as organised as it could be and I don't know if I should rearrange stuff without discussion: I'd like to see a more clear separation between ongoing projects that have people actively organising around them already, and projects that are proposed/what people want to learn but don't have people organising them yet. I see that that's currently divided as Projects/Ideas but it's not clear at looking at the list that the other projects are already underway. Also having everything pop up as Projects/ isn't really easy to read, and having one item per line is probably easier than having 3 columns. I would suggest having at the very least 2 sections on the projects page, the top with projects already organising/underway, the bottom half for ideas/suggestions that need people to get involved/to teach/etc.

Sorry for just dropping in with all of this, I've been totally uninvolved thus far and feel a bit out of place! Apologies if I've said silly things & thanks for your patience :)

(Also apologies for everyone I have annoyed by being incredibly naive about wiki pages)

It's a wiki feel free to edit how ever you like.

With the formatting I'll try to have a look at it but I don't have much spare time.

No worries, I'll read through all the how to edit stuff and see what I can manage. Gausie will help.
